Arsenal fans were sporting this banner at Gander Green Lane last night.

I'm sure it was aimed at Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, but it now seems quite appropriate for Sutton.

As manager Paul Doswell said "it's a very sad end to what was a good story".

Jason Burt, chief football writer of the Telegraph, has been talking to BBC Radio 5 live about the incident: "They have probably done this to show it doesn't involve the club or that they are involved in that behaviour.

"He's not a key player, so maybe it was easier to ask him to resign to keep a distance between the club and the player.

"I don't necessarily think he should have resigned. He should have said it was a silly thing to do and apologised. 

"It seems a brutal step for someone who is so embedded in the club. I have a lot of sympathy for him."

Andrew Primett: If Wayne Shaw knew about the Pie offer, but was hungry and didn't eat a pie, would he have been in breach of the rules ? 

William Schofield: Shaw: such a non-story, outrageously blown out of proportion. The FA had bigger issues than a man and his pie.

"Wayne has paid a heavy price. It's one of the saddest stories in football today because he is a great character within this club. He is the President of the Community team, disabled teams and the women's team. 

"We have done the right thing though. 

"Unfortunately he didn't leave the board with any alternative - we've all been looked at as to whether we have had a bet.

"It's a depressing day for me in football but I can clarify none of the players had anything to do with this and if any players have had a bet they will suffer the same consequence as Wayne."

Here's the statement from Sutton:

"Wayne Shaw has resigned from his role at Sutton United following the events of last evening and subsequent publicity. 

"He has said that he 'fully understands the club's position regarding this matter.'  

"We are naturally disappointed that Wayne's time with us should end in this manner, and would like to thank him for his contribution to the club and wish him well for the future."  

Paul Doswell says Wayne Shaw leaves the club with a heavy heart and provided "great banter" for a few weeks, but he adds the reserve goalkeeper has made a "costly error".

"I'm devastated, the chairman is devastated. I have spoken to Wayne and the guy is in tears, crying down the phone. It is a very sad situation," he told Sky Sports News.

"But the club cannot be seen to accept that situation. We try to run the most professional non-league club we can be.

"It might be funny to some people ,but it shows me and the club in a bad light. 

"We realised the implications of what happened with the FA and the gambling commission and Wayne has resigned on the back of that.

"None of us where aware of the situation or we would have advised him against it. we conducted ourselves superbly throughout this FA Cup run, it is very unfortunate.

"He is a very good friend of mine but it is something the board in particular found very unacceptable."
