  3. 'You'll have to ask Sherlock'

    Crawley 5-3 Stoke (Pens)

    Sherlock

Stoke boss Nathan Jones was asked if the players were still playing for him: “Whether they don’t want to play for me, or it was just playing poorly, you will have to ask Sherlock Holmes. I don’t know. I don’t think so.

"For 45 minutes, that’s as bad a performance as I’ve had since I’ve been a manager.

“We were nowhere near first half. No commitment, desire. Yeah, we made a lot of changes, but were still strong enough. Some of those players, it might be a while before they play."

  4. Post update

Full marks to Marco Silva for throwing in the classic quote after a cup win, 'We deserved the three points."

  5. 'We controlled the game'

    Sheff Weds 0-2 Everton

Everton boss Marco Silva: "It was important to see Dominic Calvert-Lewin score twice in the game - we deserved to win, it was clear for me. We controlled the game.

"I would have liked to see us create more chances in the second half but that is something for us to work on."

  6. 'Good lessons'

    Luton 0-4 Leicester

Luton boss Graeme Jones: "I think we will take good lessons from it, because there’s nothing better than playing against that kind of quality and for us to try to adhere to that level, because that’s what we’re all in the game for.”

Jason Wakeling: Poch has taken this squad as far as he can. Over achieved for too long and other clubs fading has helped elevate Spurs to a loftier position than their performances deserve. Only 34 points since the start of 2019.

  8. 'We want to do something important in this competition'

    Arsenal 5-0 Nottingham Forest

Arsenal boss Unai Emery, speaking to Sky Sports: "We played on Sunday but we want to do something important in this competition.

"This was a very good opportunity to play with different players and those who didn't play much in the last match.

"Nottingham Forest are playing well in the Championship and we had to use our capacity."

  9. 'Couldn't have written it better'

    Arsenal 5-0 Nottingham Forest

Arsenal defender Rob Holding, who scored in his first appearance of 2019 after injury, told Sky Sports: "It has been a long process with a lot of long days in the gym. I couldn't have written it better myself, how it panned out was just brilliant."

  10. 'The finishing was the difference'

    Portsmouth 0-4 Southampton

Portsmouth boss Kenny Jackett, speaking to Sky Sports: "They have got quality. The way they close and the way they pass.

"The finishing was the big difference between the clubs. If I am looking at the game we created a lot of chances and got up and around the box but couldn’t finish."

Will Shears: This Tottenham side don't look like they are playing for the manager anymore. Why Eriksen is even near the squad is beyond me. Something's got to change or it's mid table for Spurs.

Brian Sands: Big question now for Pochettino - does he hang around with gutless players who do not have the wherewithal to win any trophy or does he voluntarily walk away before Levy sharpens his axe?

  13. 'Exceptional humans'

    Preston 0-3 Manchester City

    Taylor Harwood-Bellis

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola on Sky Sports: "We made a good solid performance against a team third in the Championship, we played really good.

"I am pleased a lot with Eric Garcia and Taylor Harwood-Bellis at the back, they helped us a lot. They combined, they suit each other perfectly and they have played in the academy every weekend. They are exceptional human beings with a ood mentality.

    "I am very pleased."

  14. 'Pressure cranked up'

    Crawley 5-3 Stoke (Pens)

    Sohail Sahi

    BBC Radio 5 live

    Crawley

The pressure will crank up on Stoke boss Nathan Jones - they have Forest in the Championship on the TV on Friday night as well.

BBC Radio Stoke are next to me and say it might be the end for him if he doesn't win that.

Crawley have knocked out higher-league opposition for the second round in a row.

  15. "That's why they're champions"

    Preston 0-3 Man City

    Alex Neil and Pep Guardiola

Preston boss Alex Neil: We didn’t disappoint. For the first 20 minutes, we started brightly on the front foot. We went chasing the ball for the first goal. It’s good quality goals for them.

"The goals they scored were stuff we talked about. But when you play against that quality with their speed, it’s one thing to talk about stopping them. It’s another thing to do it. We can’t get too hard on ourselves.

"Man City were the better team. Their front line is scary for any Premier League team. We need to take positives of what we did well and take them onto Saturday.

"I thought they’d play senior lads at the front if they put youngsters at the back. They pose different dilemmas – you stop that and then they try something else.

"They treat the Carabao Cup the same way as the Champions League. That’s why they’re champions. It’s always nice to come up against the best. Hopefully it should inspire them to become better."

  16. 'That's the beauty of the competition'

    Colchester 4-3 Tottenham (Pens)

    Pochettino

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino: "Colchester made a fantastic game, it was difficult. We are so disappointed we could not score in 90 minutes.

"They beat Palace on penalties too, that can happen. That's the beauty of the competition, always something can happen.

"We wanted to go further but we are out."

  17. Cups are important - Silva

    Sheffield Wednesday 0-2 Everton

    Marco Silva

Everton manager Marco Silva: “We reacted well tonight and now we move on to Saturday. When we signed [Alex] Iwobi we knew he can play behind the striker and tonight was a good moment to see him there. He can play in both positions and do well in both.

“The preparation time was short after Saturday's game but the full focus was on this game. Since the first day we were so clear about our goals - three competitions and the cups were important and we've shown that tonight.

“It was important for Dominic [Calvert-Lewin] to score twice. He did well to score in important moments. It gives him confidence. Let's hope he continues in that way.

“We controlled the game in the second half without creating as many chances but we move into the next round.”

  18. 'They have to find a way to win'

    Colchester 4-3 Tottenham (pens)

    Owen Coyle

Former Bolton manager on BBC Radio 5 Live

Tottenham players look down as they link arms during the penalty shootout

Spurs are already 10 points adrift in the league and so that is a huge ask, then they ask can we win a trophy? This one has gone now.

I do think they have to find a way to win games quickly. Mauricio Pochettino is a wonderful manager but a lot of those players have to stand up and take accountability.

Robert Weaver: This is what happens when you rock up with 10 changes & expect a lower league team to simply roll over. Embarrassing doesn't begin to cover it. Congrats to Colchester, but the house that Poch built is tumbling down around his ears. What an utter shambles

  20. 'Class act'

    Luton 0-4 Leicester

Nice moment this after James Justin was earlier applauded by the Luton fans after scoring.

Justin moved to Leicester in the summer and the home supporters broke out into 'he's one of our own' after he scored the Foxes second goal of the evening.
