  2. Police take to social networks to warn youngsters about sexting

    Police have set up a Snapchat account and recruited media students from Carlisle College in a new campaign to warn young people of the dangers of so-called "sexting".

    The students will tell a fictional story of a girl who gets caught out after sending her boyfriend a naked photo of herself.

    Police say they'll also be using an Instagram account and a Facebook event as part of  the campaign .

  4. Police seek drivers after man, 67, is assaulted

    Police are investigating an attack on a pensioner which left him needing hospital treatment for what are described as "significant facial injuries". 

    The incident happened a week ago on Sunday in Aikton, near Wigton, and police are now appealing for witnesses.

    Officers say a number of cars are thought to have passed as the 67-year-old man was assaulted.

  5. Court told how 200 child sex pictures were found on man's computer

    Police found more than 200 photos and videos of child pornography on a computer at the  home of a 66-year-old man who'd never previously been convicted of a criminal offence, Carlisle Crown Court heard.

    The court was told David Charles Cecil Johnson, (pictured) from Lowther Gardens, Grange-over-Sands, committed the offences out of "curiosity".

    Johnson admitted five offences - three charges of making indecent photographs of a child, one of possessing the illicit material and one count of possessing a prohibited image of a child. 

    He was sentenced to a year in prison, suspended for two years. 

    He must sign the sex offenders' register, complete a rehabilitation order, and was made subject to a sexual harm prevention order.

  6. Man charged with rugby club knife attack

    A man has been charged in connection with a knife attack 

    It happened at the Roose Pioneers Rugby Club, in Barrow, on 4 March, Cumbria Police said.

    A 24-year-old man has been charged with Section 18 wounding and possessing an offensive weapon.

  7. Midwife who spoke to BBC faces discipline hearing

    A midwife who spoke to BBC Look North about the downgrading of maternity services at the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven, is facing disciplinary action from the Trust which runs it.

    Bernadette Bowness spoke to the TV news programme last week, after it was decided a consultant-led maternity unit would remain for 12 months while a midwife led unit is developed. 

    Hospital campaigners have called the decision "shameful". Neither Ms Bowness nor the trust have commented.

  8. Kirkby Lonsdale top all English clubs with 91-0 stride into National League

    Kirkby Lonsdale's rugby union club has been promoted into National League Three North in style, beating Eccles 91-0 at the weekend.

    The club's director of rugby Matt Hughes says it is "unheard of" for a town as small as Kirkby Lonsdale to have a team in national level rugby union. 

    Kirkby have won 22 out of 22 games so far this season, and all bar one with a bonus point, a record unmatched by any English club in any league.

  9. Rail company says plan is working well

    The rail company Northern says its plans to deal with today's strike by the RMT union is working well, and it ran more trains during this morning's rush-hour than originally intended.

    The union says plans to buy trains which can be used for driver-only operations are potentaiully unsafe. The company says it intends to retain staff on trains, but give them more time to look after passengers.

    Northern has still had to replace more than half its services with rail replacement buses like those pictured at Carlisle, and Paul Barnfield, the regional director, said people should plan their journey home.

    He said: "Services on many routes will start to wind down from mid-afternoon onwards, with very few trains running after 17:00 this evening." 

  10. Shotgun licence victory for 'short-tempered' farmer

    An investment banker-turned-farmer has got his shotgun licence back after it was taken off him after altercations with people walking across his land. 

    Michael Wentworth Waites, 62, (pictured) fell out with locals after buying the 600-acre £2m Thornthwaite Hall Farm, near Bampton, Cumbria.

    The former Deutsche Bank hedge fund manager barred a hunt from his land and accosted walkers who strayed from designated paths. 

    After a number of incdients where Mr Wentworth Waites confronted people, police revoked his licence.

    Mr Waites took his case to Carlisle Crown Court, arguing the gun was important to him for lambing and calving to ward off predators and that he enjoyed shooting. 

    Upholding his appeal, Judge Hughes said Mr Waites was "short-tempered and easily provoked", but on no occasion had a shotgun been involved.

  11. New Workington leisure centre in line for awards

    A new west Cumbrian leisure centre has been shortlisted for two building awards.

    Workington Leisure Centre has been nominated for the regional Best Public Service Building and Best Large Commercial Project categories in the LABC Building Excellence awards

    The winners will be revealed during a ceremony in Gateshead next month.   

  12. Out-of-hours health service gets a public thumbs-up

    Cumbria's out-of-hours doctor service has had a "very positive" verdict in a study carried out by Healthwatch Cumbria, which represents patients in the county.

    The Cumbria Health on Call, or CHOC service was set up by local GPs.  Healthwatch put out a call for comments and received 1,676 responses.

    David Blacklock from Healthwatch said the response "clearly demonstrates that their hard work is making a real difference when people need it the most”.

    Tracey Laing spotted these Muscovy ducks posing in front of Skiddaw, while she was walking near the village of Braithwaite, and was kind enough to send us a picture!

  14. Cyclist flown to hospital after crash

    A cyclist suffered head and facial injuries when she was struck by a car near Kirkby Stephen.

    The cyclist, whose injuries were said not to be life-threatening, was flown to the Cumberland Infirmary at Carlisle.

  15. Cumbria's weather: Dry and bright

    It should be a dry and bright day with variable cloud and sunny spells, the best of which will develop from the north this afternoon. There'll be gentle westerly winds and a maximum temperature of about 10C (50F).

  16. Coach 'proud' of first performance against Canadians

    Whitehaven were beaten 24-10 by the Toronto Wolfpack in the first ever meeting of the two rugby league sides yesterday. 

    The Canadians - the first trans-Atlantic side to play in Britain - are hot favourites to win League One, and are the RFL's latest experiment as they try to expand the sport's global appeal. 

    Despite the defeat 'Haven coach Carl Forster was delighted with how his side competed.

  17. Footpath planned along line of 'dry' canal

    A new all-weather accessible footpath is going to be created between Kendal and Natland, along the route of the Lancaster Canal.

    Work could start on the £184,000 project in the autumn, following the line of the canal even though much of it is dry, or filled in.

    The Lancaster Canal Partnership hopes to extend the trail to Lancaster - and then eventually to Preston, where the canal begins.  

    Campaign groups have pressed for years for the canal to be reopened , but apart from some lengths cleared by volunteers, no overall scheme has ever neared fruition.

    The Lake District rangers who report on winter conditions on the high fells say a thaw is continuing at all levels.
