Sellafield engineer told to 'be gentler' wins new discrimination hearing
Martin Lewes
Reporter
A woman engineer who was escorted from Sellafield only 12 weeks after starting work has been told she can take her case for discrimination before a second employment tribunal, after an appeal judge overturned the findings of an earlier hearing.
Susan Tudor had been an engineer for 36 years but found herself "the only woman in a man's world" in 2014, the appeal heard.
Her immediate manager, who'd never had a woman engineer work for him, told her she should be "gentler, kinder and generally nicer", admitting later he would not have used the same words to a man.
Announcing his findings, Judge Murray Shanks said an earlier hearing in Manchester, which dismissed her case, had failed to consider her case rigorously, or take account of "the overall picture".
"Regrettably, the whole case will have to be remitted to a fresh tribunal for rehearing."
