  1. Warning: The robots are coming...and they have violins

    BBC World Service

Finally today, remember when Jim Morrison from The Doors predicted the rise of EDM music and DJ culture?  That was way back in the 60s...

Well the BBC World Service has been gazing into the distant future in search of the next big musical craze.

Like them, have you ever wondered what music written by computer sounds like? Well wonder no more friends as Artificial Intelligence machines can now compose original music.

But is this a good thing for the humans musicians or bad? Or Badbadnotgood? Listen below and find out.

    Video content

Video caption: Will machines become better than humans at composing music?

We'll leave you to ponder on that.

Scroll down for more on Snoop and Trump's big beef, Katy Perry being a tease (again) and some crazy goings-on at a DJ class in Nottingham.

Plus more visa woes for artists trying to get into the US to play SXSW festival in Austin.

They'll now have to settle for a Texas BBQ pizza and to tune in to Huw Stephens live from SXSW on Radio 1 tonight from 22:00 GMT instead.

Just like the rest of us.

  2. Is there a Sia movie on the way?

    Video content

Video caption: And there’s some pretty exciting news from Sia!

Pop superstars Sia and P!nk spoke to Radio 1's Greg James about working with Norwegian songwriting duo Stargate on their new track Waterfall (not to be confused with The Stone Roses one. Or the TLC one. This one below is totes different).

P!nk, who'll headline V Festival this summer also tells Greg all about her "fat and delicious" 10-week-old son, while Sia reveals she's working on her first ever feature film.

  3. The Cranberries to release new unplugged album

    Rolling Stone magazine

    Dolores O'Riordan of The Cranberries

Many of us have been waiting for years to hear something new from political Irish rockers The Cranberries and it seems our penury is finally drawing to a close.

Their new unplugged album, Something Else, is set for release on 28 April and will feature stripped-down and  orchestral renditions of classic singles like Linger , as well as three new songs.

Singer Dolores O'Riordan told Rolling Stone magazine: "Linger was the first song I wrote after joining the Cranberries.

"I was 18, and the youngest member of the band was 16 at the time. We never imagined it'd be such a big hit."

Ah the sweet folly of youth.

The band will embark on a UK tour soon after, starting in Belfast on 17 May and ending in York on 27 May.

  4. Blondie searching for the sound of the underground

We don't think they mean Girls Aloud by this but we can't be sure.

The New York new wave legends dropped in for a chat with Lauren Laverne and told her they're constantly tunneling for new underground music...

...and they're calling for the "the resurgence of the hippy movement."

So pop some flowers in your hair and have a listen above.

  5. Cat Power performs with 'wonderful woman' Romy xx

    Cat Power
Image caption: xx marks the spot

The light is creeping out the end of the tunnel for The xx as their eight Day + Night residency comes to an end this evening.

We've already seen special collaborations emerge from the series - with one highlight being their appearance alongside Swedish superstar Robyn.

Now Cat Power has got in on the action.

While supporting the band at Brixton Academy last night she introduced to the stage a mystery "wonderful woman" and "special person in my life"...

...which of course only turned out to be ruddy Romy.

The band responded by posting the below video along with the following caption:

"Thank you so much for last night  @catpowerofficial  it was a real dream come true to sing with you! xx Romy xx"

Awww. What's the female equivalent of a bromance?

  6. Write the theme tune, sing the theme tune...

    The Radiophonic Workshop

The great musical minds behind the theme tunes for Doctor Who and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy are back with their first new album since 1985.

The BBC's Radiophonic Workshop was decommissioned in 1998 after the corporation's budget was cut and, while original members have reunited for live shows since, Burials In Several Earths represents their first new studio output in over 30 years.

Original members Peter Howell, Roger Limb, Dr Dick Mills, Paddy Kingsland and “long-time associate composer” Mark Ayres were all involved in the making of the new album, which has been described as an “evocative suite of synth improvisations”... Nice.

It's out on 19 May and you can listen to a preview below.

Liverpool has always been a crucible of potent musical talent, and 12 of the city's best current acts have been nominated for the sixth annual GIT Award.

The award - run by the GetIntoThis blog - has been dubbed the "Scouse Mercury Prize" and this year's list shines a light on a very healthy scene.

Nominees include rising hip-hop star Aystar, indie veterans The Coral, Glastonbury emerging talent winners She Drew The Gun (above), singer-songwriter Louis Berry (below) and Blossoms' favourite band The Vryll Society.

  8. Bette Midler shares first photo from Hello Dolly revival

    View more on twitter

"Here I am for the first time as Dolly!" tweeted Bette Midler last night, alongside an image of herself in a red gown with a flamboyant feathered headdress.

The shot is from the upcoming Broadway revival of Hello Dolly! - a Broadway musical about a meddling widower who acts as a matchmaker for grumpy "half a millionaire" Horace Vandergelder.

The original production ran for 2,844 performances between 1964 and 1970, winning 10 Tony Awards - a record haul that wouldn't be beaten for 37 years.

Bette Midler's new production, which opens on 20 April, has already made $40 million in advance ticket sales, the highest pre-show advance in Broadway history,  Playbill.com  reports.

  9. Clean Bandit preview new single, Symphony

    View more on twitter

If anyone can end Ed Sheeran's run at the top of the charts, it's Clean Bandit - who spent an enviable nine weeks at number one last year with Rockabye.

The follow-up is called Symphony, it features Swedish sensation Zara Larsson and is out this Friday.

The band have just tweeted a preview (see above). Sadly, it doesn't come with Sean Paul shouting "DAILY STRUGGLE" over the top but otherwise the prognosis is good (even if the artwork is atrocious).

  10. Snoop and Trump in happier times (2011)

They've officially fallen out as of today (scroll down to find out why) but 'twas not always the case.

We remember when these two used to be pretty tight.

  11. will.i.am shoots a video in the Rovers Return

will.i.am and the Voice UK coaches in the Rovers Return

    THIS IS NOT A JOKE.

Rapper, entrepreneur and wearer of hats will.i.am has filmed his latest music video on the cobbled streets of Coronation Street. We don't know why, and we're not sure we want to - but what an image.

The shoot was for his latest track Fiyah, which he performed on The Voice UK on last weekend.

It features lyrics like: “I want to burn it up like this... I make it hot like this... It's the inferno," which is a pretty insensitive thing to sing in the pub where Sunita met a fiery end .

  12. SuperGlu at SXSW: Guitar stolen but band having 'great time'

    Richard Haugh

    BBC Introducing in Suffolk

"The biggest band from Britain's second smallest town", aka SuperGlu, are in Texas and seem to be having a great time at the South By Southwest Festival.

The band, who are based in Manningtree (and Ipswich), have played two showcase gigs at the prestigious event, with more to come throughout the week.

Last night's set was broadcast live on Metro's Facebook page , with singer/guitarist Ben Brown telling the crowd that his guitar had been stolen.

You can watch the set here , but be warned there's some swearing (from the crowd).

  13. Pete Townshend writes new song for rock opera Tommy

    Pete Townsend

Move over, Pinball Wizard. The Who 's rock opera Tommy is getting a new song.

Guitarist Pete Townshend has written the "torch song" for a new touring production of his musical, which opens at the end of this month.

The show, based on The Who's 1969 concept album, tells the story of a young boy who is so traumatised by his father's murder that he chooses to stop communicating with the outside world.

The cast of Tommy in rehearsals

This latest version, directed by Kerry Michael, features a reworked opening with Townsend's new song Acid Queen 2 in the second act.

It will be performed by Peter Straker, who plays prostitute and drug dealer the Acid Queen.

"I'm quite elated about," Straker told the BBC during a break in rehearsals. "To have a new song in it is a great honour - I hope I can do it well.

"The Acid Queen is a shaman-like character, a very powerful figure.

"But in Act Two she hasn't healed Tommy and the song deals with how you deal with fame when it's faded."

  14. Kehlani postpones European tour for emergency surgery

    Kehlani

R&B star Kehlani has put her European tour on hold to go under the knife.

The star revealed she needed "unexpected surgery” on a hernia, and would be skipping dates in Germany, Poland, Switzerland, Austria, France, Belgium and the Netherlands.

“I've enjoyed being on the road in Europe so so much these past weeks,” she wrote on Instagram. "As some of you know I have a hernia (that squishy ball thingy above my belly button) and it's gotten to a point of necessary surgery."

In case you were in any doubt about her condition, Kehlani then posted an image of the hernia (warning: don't scroll down if you haven't had your dinner yet).

  15. Lost Elgar recording to be released

    Edward Elgar

In August 1933, Edward Elgar teamed up with the BBC Symphony Orchestra to record his Elegy for Strings, Op. 58.

Written just after the death of his closest friend and advisor, Augustus Jaeger, it is one of the composer's most moving works - with echoes of Nimrod (the Enigma variation he had previously written for Jaeger) peering through the bars.

While the BBC Symphony Orchestra's interpretation of the work became a standard, it turns out that the released version was their second take.

Elgar and the orchestra made an earlier cut of Elegy in April 1933, which has languished in obscurity until now.

It has been rediscovered and remastered by SOMM, who plan to release it on 31 March.

According to a totally objective press release, "There is no doubt that this recording has more energy with a greater sense of 'line’ and ebb-and-flow than the later performance and its neglect by Elgar and HMV is something of a mystery."

You can judge for yourself later this month.

  16. LOL with Ann Marie and Mollie

    BBC Radio 1

Right we've made it to lunch time, so let's have a little laugh shall we?

Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills knows that laughter is the best medicine and so he's hosting a 24 hour LOLathon to raise money for Red Nose Day.

London singer Anne-Marie popped in to join him earlier and seemed to have a right good laugh.

The old ones are the best.

Mollie from The Saturdays was kind enough to join in with the fun too...

...though she wasn't too keen on being placed in the 'posh jokes' section.

  17. Stereophonics are still keeping it real, daddyio

    Kelly Jones of the Sterephonics

Ahead of the release of their "anthemic" new 10th studio album  Welsh rockers The Stereophonics have told NME their music is "still talking to young people and the working classes".

    Which is good of them.

The follow up to 2015's number one album Keep The Village Alive is apparently finished and due out later this year.

Frontman Kelly Jones told the British music mag about the importance of staying true to your roots and keeping the "people on the street view"...which we think could be a great new mobile phone app.

Nicky Wire of the Manic Street Preachers

And while we're on the subject of Welsh 90s rock icons, the Manic Street Preachers are to release a 10th anniversary reissue of their eighth album, Send Away The Tigers.

The Manics - apparently all together at once - said: "Send Away The Tigers was a very important record for us.

“It gave us a new lease of life and helped us to rediscover our love of the band."

Staring on 12 May you'll be able to rediscover it for yourself, via a re-issue which will contain remastered tracks, demos, b-sides, and live performances from Glastonbury that year.

  18. Adele has a secret Twitter account

    Adele

    Speaking of social media...

...Adele fans know she has a certain way with words (we even compiled her best quotes from Glastonbury into a single page last year) - but her Twitter account is oddly anodyne.

Speaking to Graham Norton in 2015, she revealed that management had banned her from accessing Twitter after a few too many "drunk tweets" late at night.

"I mean I'm not a drinker any more, but when Twitter first came out I was, like, drunk tweeting, and nearly put my foot in it quite a few times.

"So my management decided that you have to go through two people and then it has to be signed off by someone, but they're all my tweets."

Well, guess what? She's TAKEN BACK CONTROL, secretly setting up a separate Twitter account so she can speak her mind and (we assume) stalk Beyonce.

“I was looking on Twitter last night," she told an audience in Brisbane.

"They don’t know I have a secret account, well obviously they do now because I said that."

Of course, now everyone wants to find that account...

*Look away now if easily offended...

Well... erm... this is a bit awkward.  But it's happened again.

This time, though, it's purely intentional... and Radio 1's Greg James is to blame.

  20. Take That are gigantic

    Take That

I mean just look at them (above).  There's no actual stage there...

Boy band behemoths Take That recently scored their 28th chart hit with Giants, the debut single from their new album Wonderland.

It finds Gary, Mark and Howard in the not-entirely-unfamiliar territory of the empowering pop anthem, banging on about how we're all "giants" who can shape history.

They've just released the music video, which features contemporary dancers swaying around, refracting beams of light with their flailing limbs; while the Take That boys wear some fetching floral formalwear.
