  2. Andover swimming pool closure sparks anger

    Campaigners have spoken of their frustration at plans to close a swimming pool  long before its replacement is ready. 

    The current pool and sports hall in Andover will close next month, with a new complex not due to open for several months and no temporary facility yet in place.  

    The council said the community would have a "state of the art" facility to enjoy for decades to come.

  3. Jack wins local hero award

    Ninety-one-year-old Jack Poole from Gosport was among those honoured a national awards ceremony to specifically celebrate achievements of the over 65s.

    Mr Poole is a regular volunteer at Gosport’s SEARCH Museum, and his Local Hero award was voted for by members of the public.

    He received his Churchill Award at a ceremony in London earlier this week.

  4. Taxi driver rapped for overcharging cruise ship passengers

    A taxi driver in Southampton has had his licence revoked for overcharging cruise ship passengers and having numerous defects with their vehicle, including a tyre with its tread completely worn off.

    The city council's Licensing General Sub-Committee revoked the Hackney Carriage and Private Hire driver’s licences with immediate effect.

  5. Eight arrests in Basingstoke drugs raids

    Eight people have been arrested as part of an operation to disrupt the supply of Class A drugs in Basingstoke.

    A total of five warrants were executed out at addresses in Brighton Hill, Kings Furlong, Rooksdown and Winklebury on Tuesday. A shotgun, cash and drugs were seized during the raids.

    One man has been charged with driving offences and three men and three women have been bailed on a drugs offences. One man remains in police custody having been arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm and possession of Class A drugs.

  7. Council considers merger referendum

    Christchurch councillors are to meet on 21 March to consider whether to hold a referendum about plans to abolish Dorset's nine councils and replace them with two unitary authorities.

    The borough was one of three councils to reject the proposals , which would see it merge with Bournemouth and Poole.

    Former council leader Ray Nottage, who supported the plans, was ousted last month .

    Acting council leader David Flagg said it was vital that councillors took into account the wishes of residents.

    He said: "By holding a referendum, we will understand what truly matters to our residents."

  8. Pupils with learning disabilities describe experiences

    A group of Hampshire pupils with learning disabilities have been describing their experience of mainstream schools, as part of School Report News Day 2017.

    Jamie and Max, who now attend a specialist school in Didben Purlieu, said they were affected by noise and crowds.

    Jamie told BBC South Today: "The teacher once said to the supply teacher, 'Jamie's autistic', and they replied, 'What does that mean, is it treatable?'"

  9. NHS hospital opens renovated private unit

    Bournemouth's main NHS hospital is launching a new refurbished unit for private patients later this month.

    The four-bedroom unit will be run by Bournemouth Private Clinic (BPC), which has already been operating since 2008.

    BPC says NHS staff do private work as overtime and all profits are reinvested in NHS facilities.

    Similar units are already operating at NHS hospitals in Poole, Southampton and Portsmouth.

  10. Council: 'No new land' for football club

    A council says it has no land for Basingstoke Town Football Club to relocate to "at low or no cost".

    The authority has responded after the club said it had abandoned its two favoured options for a ground move  to help clear its £2m debts.

    Departing chairman Rafi Razzak said the council had effectively blocked the plans.

    Senior councillor Simon Bound said he would welcome improved facilities at the club's Camrose stadium and was "surprised" at the club's "pressing" desire to leave the site.

  11. Saints' stars in England squad

    Nathan Redmond and James Ward-Prowse have both been named in Gareth Southgate’s senior England squad for the forthcoming games against Germany and Lithuania.

    The Southampton duo are included for the first time and join fellow Saints Fraser Forster and Ryan Bertrand in Southgate’s first pick of the national team at this level for the games on 22 and 26 March.

  12. BreakingSouthern Health: All non-executive directors resign

    The four remaining non-executive directors at the heavily-criticised Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust have resigned, the interim chairman has announced.

    Alan Yates said the trust has completed a review of its mental health and learning disability services and details of its findings will be published next week.

    He added: "My colleague non-executive directors have offered me their full support in the development of the future strategy of Southern Health over the last few months. 

    "It is clear to us all that the Trust leadership will need to look quite different if it is to meet the needs of patients and service users, as well as its stakeholders in the future.

    "As a consequence, four non-executive directors have this week jointly offered their resignation from their posts so that the governors can, with my help, recruit to the need for all five new non-executive directors."

  13. Lynx helicopters to make farewell flypast

    Four Royal Navy Lynx helicopters will fly over parts of southern England tomorrow, ahead of the aircraft's decommissioning on 31 March after 41 years' service.

    The helicopters will travel from Lyme Regis to Portsmouth from about 11:44 GMT to 13:18 GMT, before heading north to Odiham and returning to their Yeovilton base later in the afternoon.

  14. Basingstoke FC ground move 'blocked by council'

    Basingstoke Town Football Club says it has abandoned its two favoured options for a ground move to help clear its £2m debts.

    The Southern League Premier side had hoped to redevelop its Camrose Stadium and move to a greenfield site or the Winklebury football complex.

    Departing chairman Rafi Razzak said the borough council had effectively blocked the plans, leaving the club with "few options".

    The authority said it would be responding to the claim.

    In December, the club was put up for sale for 99p on eBay, in what it  later called a "misguided publicity stunt".

  15. Southampton makes 'clean energy' pledge

    Southampton will have "100% clean energy" by 2040, ruling Labour councillors have pledged.

    The commitment would help to address a global "environmental crisis", according to a motion voted through by ruling Labour councillors last night.

    Council leader Simon Letts said: "As the sunniest city in the UK.... 25% of our energy needs could be met by roof top solar energy.

    "We also need to do some innovative thinking about how we can harvest energy from the tides."
