Cumbria's Police and Crime Commissioner is urging the county not to become complacent following the recent terror attack in London, but he's warned against giving all police officers firearms.

Peter McCall who served in the Army for 34 years, says despite there being no specific threat to Cumbria, members of the public should report any suspicious activity.

Cumbria has come up in previous terrorist investigations; Members of the gang who failed to carry through a suicide attack on 217 July 2005 were found to have been involved in training camps in the Lake District .

But Mr McCall says a balance needs to be struck about making changes in response to the attack such as arming every police officer.

Police wish to speak to this man in connection with a burglary in Ennerdale Drive in Barrow.

He was seen close to a house that was burgled at just before 13:00 yesterday.

Teenagers from Penrith have travelled to Denmark to compete in a national amateur boxing tournament.

They're from from Penrith Elite Amateur Boxing Club and the youngest competitor is 12 and the eldest is 17.

They are taking part in Hvidovre Box Cup, which includes young boxers from various parts of Europe.

The team will box against fighters from Finland, Holland, Germany, Spain and others, with the finals on Spain.

A man from Windermere who threatened to cut off the head of a police officer has been sent to prison.

Carlisle Crown Court heard how officers went to Anthony Grogan's home on Thornbarrow Road to serve a community breach warrant, but the 25-year-old refused to let them in. 

He wielded a knife, threw items out of the house, then threatened the police officer.

He also held a blade to his own throat, the hearing heard. 

Eventually, a negotiator and Grogan's solicitor persuaded him to give himself up. 

He admitted a number of charges including affray and criminal damage and was jailed for 21 months. 

It will be dry, clear and cold tonight with a touch of frost, particularly in rural areas.  The lowest temperatures will be about 0C (32F).

Martin Lahiff was caught when he incited what he thought was a child to commit sexual acts online .

He was talking to an undercover police officer and his home was raided the following day.

Officers found more than 1,100 threads on his computer where, sometimes pretending to be a girl himself, he would film one girl performing a sexual act, and then show the film to another girl, encouraging her to go further.

The resulting films were distributed to other paedophiles around the world.

"He is incredibly dangerous. He's dangerous to people anywhere, all over the world," says Det Con Ryan Parker, of Cumbria Police. 

"The psychological problems this causes children - they have been abused basically."

Martin Lahiff, the Barrow man who was sentenced to 10 years in prison today for inciting children to commit sex acts online so he could film them, was tricked by undercover police officers.

The case reveals the work of Cumbria Police's digital media investigation unit.

There, officers join the internet chatrooms where they suspect paedophiles may be stalking children and wait for others to strike up suspicious conversations that turn to sexual matters.

Det Con Ryan Parker, of Cumbria Police, says Lahiff was seen to be chatting and sending indecent videos.

The Mountain Heritage Trust, which holds a huge collection of documents and items from the history of British mountaineering, is officially opening its new archive building today in Cumbria.

The aim is eventually to have a permanent display at the Blencathra Field Studies Centre near Threlkeld.  

Typical of those whose possessions contribute to the collection, is Joe Tasker who vanished during an expedition to Everest in 1982.

A 26-year-old Barrow man who incited children as young as 12 to perform sex acts online, which he could then share worldwide, has been sent to prison for 10 years.

Appearing at Preston Crown Court, Martin Lahiff, of Storey Square, admitted 16 offences including making indecent images of a child.

The court heard officers from Cumbria Police's digital media investigation unit found more than 300 images of children, many in the most serious categories, and evidence of chat threads with children.

He was jailed for 10 years, placed on the sex offenders' register for life and was made subject to a sexual harm prevention order.

Det Insp Jenny Beattie, of Cumbria Police, said: "Lahiff is a dangerous predator who spent a lot of time committing these sickening child sex offences and has rightly been brought to justice."

Police say an 87-year-old man who suffered serious head injuries after his mobility scooter overturned near Grasmere, has died.

The accident happened yesterday afternoon at about 16:00 on Red Bank Road, a steep and winding lane between the village and the Langdale valley.

He was flown to hospital in Preston, but died later yesterday evening.  Police have renewed an appeal for witnesses.

There are delays of up to 90 minutes on the West Coast Main Line between Cumbria and London, after a person was hit by a train near Stafford.  Some replacement buses are running.

A mountain-biker rescued by the Great North Air Ambulance after he crashed in the Lake District, has raised just over £3,900 for the service in gratitude.

Derek Tunstall, who volunteered for 30 years with the Cockermouth mountain rescue team, suffered broken ribs and a collapsed lung when he fell on Ullock Pike, near Bassenthwaite.

Members of his team and Keswick were also called out.

Derek raised the money by riding 210 miles from St Bees to Robin Hood's Bay in six days; he's also raised money for the two teams.

Roadworks on the A590 at Meathop and Lindal, where completion of flood-prevention work at the dip has now been delayed by a week, are once again causing delays.
