  4. Swimming pool project campaign under way after decades of hope

    Patrick Byrne

    BBC News

People in Swaffham are hoping the decades-old dream of building a swimming pool in the town could soon become a reality after local mothers raised £15,000 through fundraising events.

    Land for pool

Fundraisers also have an option on land to build the pool, but they need £500,000 to make the job viable.

With this amount of money they can get matched funding for the £1.5m total cost of the project.

Carolyn Watts, is one of the people behind the plan and said the community was working together to hit the financial target.

"The land belongs to the town council and is being held for this project, but we cannot be sure until after the coming election," she said.

  5. Dualling of A47 congestion hotspot priority for Highways England

    Patrick Byrne

    BBC News

Building a dual carriageway on the final single track section of the A47 between East Dereham and the Norwich bypass is being considered a priority by Highways England.

The agency said: "This dualling of the A47 between Easton and North Tuddenam, including where it currently passes through Hockering, will make a real difference to all our users on this road.

"It will also provide an economic stimulus for the whole region by providing safer, more reliable and less congested journeys.

"There are important decisions to be made for this £300m work along the A47 corridor, including choosing between the four different options we have proposed for dualling this stretch of the A47."

  6. Villagers consulted on A47 dualling concerned about options

    Patrick Byrne

    BBC News

Villagers living near a section of the A47 that becomes congested in heavy traffic, where it narrows from a dual carriageway to a single track, are concerned about plans by the Highways Agency aimed at eliminating the problem.

Parish councillor Richard Hawker said current plans could make life for Hockering residents even worse.

The three options are to dual the current road or build new routes either north or south of the village.

"If the present road is dualled it will go closer to several homes which will make noise problems worse," said Mr Hawker .

"It may be better to improve junctions at Honingham and Easton.

"Hockering residents are concerned dualling might create problems. They want access to local villages, routes to Norwich and Dereham as well as retaining the bus service."

The other plans could affect all or some of these objections, he said.

  7. New dual carriageway may not be answer to A47 problems, villagers say

    Patrick Byrne

    BBC News

The A47 has become notorious for accident blackspots, queuing traffic and hold-ups.

Authorities and motorists believe something needs to be done to improve safety as well as reduce journey times and are considering more dual carriageway between North Tuddenham and Easton.

    North Tuddenham junction

Highways England estimates a dual carriageway on this section could cost £300m, but local communities most affected by new road layouts are questioning the options presented for the current consultation.

Hockering residents are most vocal in this and parish councillor Richard Hawker said Highways England is not providing enough detail on its plans.

"They are just lines on paper at present and we are disappointed Highways England has not engaged more with us despite several approaches."

  8. From the archives: Pilgrimage palm crosses 1936

Some 81 one years ago this month workers of Walsingham were captured on camera making up palm crosses and branches to be carried in procession and distributed on Palm Sunday in many Catholic and Anglican churches.

Walsingham was known throughout Europe as "England's Nazareth" because  Richeldis de Faverches , a pious noblewoman, had a dream or apparition in 1061.

The Virgin Mary was said to have appeared to her and asked her to build a house like the one in which Jesus was raised in Nazareth and when this was done it became a popular centre for pilgrimage.

  11. Giant turbine blades for North Sea wind farm arrive at port

    Andrew Turner

    BBC Radio Norfolk

The first giant blades for a North Sea wind farm have arrived at the outer harbour at Great Yarmouth.

Four blades, each close to 100ft (30m) long, built by electrical giant Siemens were unloaded earlier this week.

They are destined for the 158 turbine Galloper wind farm off the Suffolk coast and will be hoisted on to 250ft (85m) towers which come in three sections and stand on deep foundations.

Port manager Richard Goffin said: "Great Yarmouth is now open as the construction base for North Sea wind farms."

The town had seen considerable investment in new sustainable energy ventures.

Peter Wright, Great Yarmouth Borough Council's economic development officer, said last year: "Great Yarmouth is already world renowned as England's offshore energy sector capital and this investment reflects confidence in the local economy, the skills of the workforce, the port facilities and the borough's status as a Centre of Offshore Renewable Engineering."

  12. New sporting chief at Norwich City ponders 'squad clear out'

    BBC Sport

The Canaries go head-to-head with Reading at home tomorrow and many of the club's players will want to get on the pitch to demonstrate their worth.

New director of sport Stuart Webber has opened the bidding on the future of Norwich City FC.

    Stuart Webber

He told the pre-match press conference he doesn't have a shortlist for new head coach, but will certainly not be going back to former club Huddersfield for manager David Wagner.

He had a warning for current players that it was "hard to disagree with the idea of a mass clear-out of the squad". So they will be keen to prove their ability if they want to stay.

Caretaker manager Alan Irvine was putting together a team for the clash with the Royals and said: "Too many of the goals we've conceded have been individual errors at key times in games."

But he is without Scottish attacking midfielder Graham Dorrans, with five goals to his name this term, who is not fit. But Irish international Wes Hoolahan is available to take on the role.

"I'm delighted to have my full-backs back. They're both absolutely fine and keen to get going again," Irvine added.

  13. New police Porsche set to star at shows, schools and colleges

    Patrick Byrne

    BBC News

People attending major events across Norfolk, as well as school pupils and college students, will be able to see a new Porsche Cayman GT4 in police livery.

The vehicle has been donated by the Lind Trust, a charity which supports the development of young people in the county, to help heighten safety awareness for all motorists, but in particular young drivers.

    Porsche Cayman GT4

Chief Constable Simon Bailey said: "Only this week we have seen the sad loss of three young lives in a road traffic collision in South Norfolk and my thoughts are with the families involved.

"Engagement and education are vital elements of the work on road safety undertaken by roads policing officers.

"I'm confident the use of the Porsche will help break down barriers and enable officers to speak with young drivers and provide road safety advice.

"The GT4 will certainly attract a lot of attention - but that's the whole idea.

"We hope the car will acts as a conversation starter, which gives us the opportunity to engage with people, but more importantly those hard-to-reach groups like young drivers."
