A Cumbrian cheerleading club, which is one of the best in the country, is raising money to compete in France.

The Workington club, CFF Infinity , won a national competition two weeks ago, which means it is now eligible to enter a competition in Las Vegas. 

But the club couldn't afford the travel expenses, so now it's trying to raise money to compete at Disneyland Paris instead.

Residents of Ulverston are a step closer to having a £13m new leisure centre.

The plan is for South Lakeland council to combine forces with the town's major employer, GSK, and redevelop the existing centre on Priory Road.

The facilities would include a swimming pool, gym, studio spaces, indoor tennis courts and sports pitches.

The new Harraby community campus has been given a commendation the national Civic Trust Awards .

The development combines a primary school, two nurseries, a community centre and a number of other facilities.

The citation says it creates "a coherent sense of shared community."

A business offering customers the chance to ride a sort of chariot pulled by huskies has grown big enough to take on trainees.

Police say they're concerned for the welfare of 48-year-old Barry Dunn, from Aspatria.

Mr Dunn was last seen at a bus stop at Langrigg on Wednesday and there have been reported sightings in Fleetwood.

Ennerdale Brewery is naming a new craft ale after a Cleator Moor man who's running 100 marathons in 100 days to raise money for the cancer charity, Macmillan.

The beer's being offered for the first time at the brewery's own bar in Rowrah on 24 March when Gary will have completed his 70th run.

The London marathon will complete his 100-day challenge.

Appropriately, Marathon Man IPA will be the strongest beer the brewery's made.

It'll stay wet and windy tonight - but the rain will ease a little by dawn as the winds die down a bit. Temperatures will rise to 10C (50F) before dropping to 7C.

A driver in his 70s may have been suffering from fatigue when his car drifted across the A595 and crashed head-on into a van coming the other way, an inquest heard.

Hayley Murdoch, who was 29, and her grandmother Sheila Dixon, 71, from Carlisle, died at the scene of the crash near Newby Cross in February last year.

Jonah Dixon, Sheila's husband, who was badly injured and now uses a wheelchair was driving that day and has no recollection of the moments before the collision,  the hearing at Cockermouth Coroner's Court heard.

PC Craig Irving, a crash investigator, said it was impossible to say what exactly caused the chain of events, but in his experience such accidents were often caused by drivers suffering fatigue. 

Coroner Kally Cheema concluded that the two women died as a result of a road traffic collision.

Seven people who plotted to bring drugs into Cumbria have been sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court to a total of nearly 31 years in prison. 

Johnathan O'Neil, 28, of Creighton Avenue, and Darren Snowden, 45, of Brookside, Raffles, Carlisle, were jailed - O'Neil for seven-and-a-half years, and Snowden for two years and eight months.

Andrew Berry, 25, of Bower Street, Carlisle, and 30-year-old Levi Howard, of High Cliff, Barrow-in-Furness, pleaded guilty to a cannabis conspiracy supply charge, and were each jailed for two years.

Kathleen Berry, 25, of Brampton Old Road, Carlisle, admitted being concerned in the supply of cannabis, and was given a community order.

Three other men from Merseyside and Lancashire were also imprisoned.

The drugs ring operated for more than eight months before police arrested them and seized tens of thousands of pounds worth of drugs. 

An inquest has heard how a car carrying members of three generations of the same Carlisle family veered across the A595 and crashed into a van, killing a woman and her granddaughter. 

Hayley Murdoch, 29, and Sheila Dixon, 71, died in the collision near Carlisle in February last year. 

Ms Murdoch's three-year-old son was seriously injured.

Witnesses have told the hearing this morning that the car, driven by Sheila Dixon's husband, Jonah, ended up in the hedge  

A verdict is expected this afternoon.

A Barrow man's been jailed for a minimum of 16 years for killing a man he'd spent the day with watching football and going to the pub.

Damien Hill, 45, of no fixed address, attacked 35-year-old Guy Hamilton in his home, slashing his jugular with a machete, on 30 April last year.  

Mr Hamilton was able to dial 999 to call for help and stagger into the street before dying from his injuries.

Hill was found guilty by a jury at Preston Crown Court today.

Mr Hamilton's parents, Liz and Kevin, said afterwards: "We feel the sentence is appropriate - justice has been done for our son Guy.”

A Cumbrian hotel's been picked to start a week of events to promote holidays in England.

Guests including Lady Penelope Cobham, who chairs the marketing organisation Visit England, are at the Sharrow Bay Hotel on the shores of Ullswater for the launch.

The group will also be touring a number of food producers in the Eden valley.
