  2. Cumbrian tourist attraction marks 20 years in business

    Honister Stale Mine

    A Lake District visitor attraction and working mine is celebrating its 20th birthday.

    Honister Slate Mine was bought by the company that currently runs it in 1997.

    The mine attracts thrill-seekers to climb its Via Ferrata up Fleetwith Pike but still exports slate across Europe and into America and Australia. 

  3. Cumbrian hospital trust holds thanksgiving service for staff

    North Cumbrian hospitals staff have been thanked for their hard work during a service at Carlisle Cathedral. 

    Yesterday's event featured readings and stories from patients at Carlisle's Cumberland Infirmary and the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven.

  4. County council pays tribute to former education head

    More on the news that's been reported by the North West Evening Mail that former Cumbria County Council education chief Caroline Sutton has died, aged 53.

    Cumbria County Council has released a tribute to her: 

    Quote Message: We are saddened by news of her sudden death and our sympathies go to her family. Caroline was a dedicated public servant whose energies were always focused on achieving the best educational outcomes for children.   5. Family pays tribute to Cumbrian man who died in Great Orton crash

    The family of a man from Houghton near Carlisle who died in a crash at Great Orton has paid tribute to him.

    Jeff Matthews, who was 28, died at the scene of a collision between his motorbike and a car on Sunday .

  6. Call for memories of south Cumbrian working men's clubs

    The county's archive service is calling for records, photographs and memories of social and working men's clubs in south Cumbria.

    A drop in session is being held between 10:00 - 12:30 and 14:00 - 16:30 today at Barrow Library where archivists hope to make copies of documents and photographs.

    It's after some of the records held at  Barrow's former House of Lords club were destroyed in a major fire in January .

    Cumbria Archives says that the books used to minute club meetings have been preserved though because they had already been put into storage.

  7. Men banned from major Carlisle city centre street

    Four men have been banned from drinking on Carlisle's Botchergate after they admitted being part of a fight in a city centre pub.

    Carlisle Crown Court was told that chairs were thrown and a snooker cue was brandished as a weapon during the brawl in the Cumberland Inn.

    Four men admitted an affray charge:

    • Christopher Callum Lowe, 30, from Baird Road, Carlisle
    • Jonathan Wall, 40, from Stonegarth, Carlisle
    • Gary Green, 52, from Mayson Street, Carlisle
    • Aaron Larmour, 28, from Barrington Street, Manchester

    Another man, Jonathon Victor O'Neil, 40, from Rimworth Drive in Manchester, said he intended to plead guilty once he had legal representation. 

    The men will be sentenced next month and have been given bail on condition they do not go to any bars on Botchergate.

  8. Police share student-told story warning of sexual exploitation

    Cumbria Police have thanked Cumbrian students for producing a story warning children and teenagers about the dangers of sexual exploitation. 

    In what the force says is a UK first, the Carlisle College students told the story of a fictional girl who agreed to send a naked photo of herself to her boyfriend which leads to her being sexually exploited.

    It was originally told using the police's new social media account on Snapchat - cumbriacops .

  10. New beer to mark inaugural south Cumbrian food festival

          Beer pump label for Kirkby Lonsdale Brewery Taste Cumbria Easter Brew

    A special beer is being brewed to mark the first edition of a food festival in Kirkby Lonsdale.

    The Taste Cumbria Easter Brew goes on sale today and will also be available during the town's Taste Cumbria festival between Friday 14 April and Sunday 16 April while stocks last.

    It's been created by Kirkby Lonsdale Brewery with help from Kennedys Fine Chocolates of Orton. 

  11. Concern for missing woman from Whitehaven

    The police say they're concerned about a 25-year-old woman who's gone missing from the Whitehaven area.

    Gemma Rice was last seen at 16:10 yesterday at the West Cumberland Hospital when she was seen wearing a black tracksuit. 

    Cumbria Police are asking anyone with information to contact them on 101.

  12. Police joy at an end to the 'Lindal dip'

    We've been reporting today that the so-called Lindal dip - an area of the A590 in South Cumbria which was notorious for flooding in heavy rain - has been repaired and reopened.
