  2. Cumbria's weather: Mostly dry and miler than of late

    It will remain mostly dry through the evening and overnight and variable amounts of cloud and light winds. 

    It will be a milder night than of late with lows of 5C (41F).

  3. Barrow maternity unit 'extras' fund passes £50,000

    A campaign to raise money for "little extras" for the new maternity unit being built at the Furness General Hospital in Barrow has already passed £50,000 towards its £250,000 target.

    The appeal was started in February and is run by the Bay Hospitals Charity. It is holding a walk across Morecambe Bay led by the Queen's Guide, Cedric Robinson, on 6 May.

  4. Child porn 'addict' caught in spite of deleting images

    A man has been convicted of viewing child pornography even though he deleted images so police could not recover any of the pictures he downloaded.

    Samuel Blackburn, who was 27, was traced through his computer's internet address, or IP, to his then home in Bowness on Windermere. 

    He confessed to police: "Yes, it is me", telling them he'd been addicted to viewing images of girls aged 12 since he was also that age.

    Blackburn, now living in Bere Regis in Dorset, admitted making indecent images, and two drug charges.

    At Carlisle Crown Court  he was ordered to attend an intensive sex offender treatment course, and made subject to the terms of a sexual harm prevention order.

  5. Homeless project helps 70 in first 18 months

    The Calderwood House project, set up in a former police station in Egremont 18 months ago, has helped 70 homeless people find somewhere to live.

    Former soldier Chris Lloyd, like many servicemen and women, found life away from the army difficult to adjust to, but says the project helped him find his feet in civvie street.

    "They were there to support me, taking me to job interviews, they're just fantastic people, every one of them," he said.

    People in the north of the county can see Megan Paterson's report on the project on Look North at 18:30 this evening on BBC1.

  6. Brexit secretary David Davis campaigns in Barrow

    David Davis, the Secretary of State for leaving the EU, has been campaigning in Barrow, saying he's confident of achieving "frictionless" trade with Europe.

    Labour says Britain needs to stay in the customs union to keep trade with the UK's biggest customers, but Mr Davis said South Cumbrian firms like BAE, GSK and Siemens would benefits from having "a wider market than simply in the European Union."

  7. Four jailed after Botchergate pub brawl

    Four men, including three from Carlisle, have been jailed after violence flared at The Cumberland Inn in Carlisle.

    Tables and pool cues were broken, and chairs thrown, as trouble flared at the pub in Botchergate, just after midnight on in March last year.

    Alan Hodgson, 39, from Liverpool, and the three men from Carlisle, Gary Christopher Green, 52, of Mayson Street, Christopher Callum Lowe, 30, of Baird Road and Jonathan Anthony Wall, 40, of Stonegarth, were all jailed for eight months

    Jonathon O'Neill, 40, of Rimworth Drive, and Aaron Larmour, 28, of Barrington Street, both Manchester, were given suspended jail terms and unpaid work.

    All six had admitted affray in the brawl just before midnight on 18 March last year.

  8. Travel: Crash slows M6 traffic just over border

    BBC News Travel

    There's slow traffic just south of the Cumbria-Lancashire border after a crash on the southbound carriageway just south of junction 34.  

    The wreckage is now on the hard shoulder so it should clear soon.

  9. Farmers plead for dog owners to keep pets on leads

    Farmers across the Lake District are on high alert, with their fields full of lambs and increasing reports of sheep-worrying by uncontrolled dogs.

  10. Rowan, nine, is youngest to take poetry title

    A nine-year-old pupil from Ambleside primary school has become the youngest ever winner of the Rydal Mount Wordsworth Prize for young poets.

    Rowan Ashworth was given the trophy and a £100 prize by William Wordsworth's great, great, great, great grandson, Christopher Wordsworth, who was one of the judges.

    His poem, "A Wild Child", beat 200 other entries. Here's the final verse:

    Wild is a child who sleeps under the stars

    Wild is the child who keeps tadpoles in jars

    Wild is a child who fell out of a tree

    Wild is the child with their own parking space at A&E

    Wild is a child that I would like to be.       

  11. Brunton Park grounds team take the honours again

    Carlisle United grounds team of Dave Mitchell, Paul Butler and Matt Henry have won the EFL League Two Grounds Team of the Season award for the pitch at Brunton Park.

    Head groundsman Mr Mitchell has previously won the title of Groundsman of the Year on a number of occasions.

  12. Farming family marks centenary of shorthorn herd on TV

    The Robinson family from near Kendal are celebrating 100 years since they registered their dairy shorthorn herd's pedigree, with an appearance on the BBC Countryfile programme this weekend.

    The presenter and farmer Adam Henson filmed a report on how six generations had cared for the herd.

    James Robinson is president of the Dairy Shorthorn Society this year, the first member of his family to hold the position.

  13. Gas firm announces road works plan for summer pipeline switch

    Gas mains firm, National Grid, has announced major plans to move a gas pipe on one of the Lake District's busiest roads this summer.

    The company says it has to move its pipes from one side of the road to the other, to make way for a new wastewater pipeline being installed by United Utilities.

    Temporary traffic lights will be installed across 200 yard stretches, starting at Storrs Hall on 8 May, and reaching Ferry Nab in October.

    United Utilities has to close the road while it installs the sewer, and it will be suspending the project through the main tourist season between May and October; National Grid says it can only move its mains in this window.

  14. Floral business celebrates blooming good result

    A floral nursery based in South Cumbria has won Best in Show for its display at the Harrogate Spring Flower Show.

    Rachel James, who's 20, designed the display that came in ahead of more than 80 nurseries from all over the country.

    She started working for Cath's Garden Plants which is based at the Heaves Hotel, when she was 13.

  15. Into the light: Barrow's latest submarine rolls out

    The latest of the Astute class submarines being built in the Devonshire Dock Hall at the BAE shipyard in Barrow has been rolled out into public view.

    The vessel, measuring 97m (975ft) in length, emerged from the construction hall at the rate of 1m (3ft) a minute.

    The nuclear-powered attack boat can fire cruise missiles 620 miles (1,000km).

    Audacious will be lowered into the water later.

    HMS Astute, Ambush and Artful are already in the fleet with three more under construction inside the huge shed.

  16. Travel: Crash slows traffic on A66 west of Penrith

  17. Northern rail strike: 'Peak passed without incident'

    In response to today's industrial action by rail staff unhappy over proposals for drivers and guards, Northern says the morning peak "passed without incident".

    It added it had now turned its attention to afternoon and evening services but urged customers travelling later to "think carefully about their plans".

    Northern published a revised timetable ahead of the 24-hour strike action by RMT members, which got under way at midnight.

  18. RMT strike action support is 'solid as a rock'

    The RMT union says backing for strike action by Northern rail staff is "solid as rock".

    General Secretary Mick Cash said: "The public support for our members fighting for safe trains for all has been fantastic and the company should take note of what their own customers and staff are saying about their plans and sit down with the union to negotiate a safe and sustainable solution to this dispute."

    The 24-hour strike began at midnight in a dispute over the role of guards on trains. 

    Arriva Rail North, which operates Northern, said very few trains would run outside 07:00 and 19:00 and urged passengers to check its strike timetable in order to plan their journeys.

  19. Weather: Most places staying dry

    There'll be variable amounts of cloud and some good spells of sunshine this afternoon with most places staying dry.

    There could be a few light isolated showers, particularly along the coast. Temperatures could be as high as 11C (52F).
