To end a day of variety, Prince visits trainer factory

This was the final stop of the day for the Prince of Wales on the first day of his Cumbrian visit.
Prince Charles met staff at the Flimby factory where the footwear company New Balance has been turning out trainers for 35 years.

So a big picture of Cumbria - from nuclear submarines, to Ennerdale's new village hub and shop, a renovated theatre, a centre to help homeless young people, to a factory producing high quality footwear, the day will have covered most of the Prince's interests.
Tomorrow, he'll be in Appleby to hear how the town is recovering from the floods of Storm Desmond.

wealth of experience and knowledge to the group from his time with the police
force."
Prince signs book to mark theatre visit

The Prince of Wales has carried out a series of visits across Cumbria today.
Among them was a tour of the Rosehill Theatre in Whitehaven where he signed the visitors book (pictured below with the director of the theatre, Richard Elder).

He then went to Whitehaven where he he was given a warm welcome at the Whitehaven Foyer, a centre for helping young people with housing issues.

The foyer is part of a national federation set up in 1992 to help people between the ages of 16 and 25 with opportunities for personal development, learning and training.
The Chief Constable of Cumbria, Jerry Graham, has paid tribute to Councillor Ray Cole, former chairman of the Cumbria Police Authority, who died at the weekend.

Ray Cole was also a former police officer, joining the Lancashire Constabulary in 1964 as a traffic policeman in Ulverston, and retiring as Millom Inspector from what was by then Cumbria Constabulary in 1996.
Mr Graham said: “All those
who had the privilege of working alongside Ray and who received his wise
counsel will remember him fondly as a man of great integrity and a true
gentleman.
“He
was a great supporter and friend to Cumbria Constabulary. Our
thoughts go out to his wife and family at this difficult time.”

The Prince of Wales, whose ranks include Admiral of the Fleet, has been shown around the huge Devonshire Dock construction halls at BAE in Barrow where the submarines of the Royal Navy are built.

Tributes paid as former police chairman and long-serving councillor dies
Colleagues have been paying tribute after the death of Ray Cole from Millom, who served his community as a councillor at town, district and county level, and was chairman of the former police authority for the county.

Mr Cole, a retired police inspector, died at the weekend.
Peter McCall, the Police and Crime Commissioner, said: "As the former distinguished Chair of Cumbria Police
Authority and an exceptional police officer, as well as his councillor roles,
Ray was a dedicated public servant."
The Mayor of Millom, Councillor Doug Wilson, a close friend, said: "He was a great source of guidance and inspiration. He was the sort of person you would aspire to be."

Overnight closures planned for road resurfacing
Cumbria highways engineers say Northside Road, which carries the A596 through Workington, will be resurfaced after Easter over 10 nights.

They say this will involve closing the road from 19:00 to 06:00 each night from 18 April.
From 2 May, the road will be closed at Calva roundabout and Hall Brow for three nights. Local access will be maintained and there will be signed diversions.
Fire crews spend 16 hours at barn fire
Six fire engines and a ladder platform were called out to fight a fire in a farm building near Aglionby at the weekend.
The crews were damping the fire down until nearly midnight on Saturday having been called just after 03:00.
Cumbrian crews responded to 34 other incidents over the weekend, including car fires, grass fires and chimney fires.

Police have begun a campaign to deter young people in Penrith from trying illegal drugs.
They say the town doesn't have a bad problem, but they want to point out the long-term effects a conviction can have on people's lives.
Convictions can affect career chances even after it's normally "spent" because of the passage of time, and it can also prevent travel to countries such as Australia or the USA.
BBC Radio Cumbria talked to teenagers at a local college to gather their views.

The director, Richard Elder, says Prince Charles will find a theatre working hard to stand on its own two feet.
"Part of the purpose of the redevelopment of Rosehill was to generate more income because public subsidy gets more and more difficult to get and more and more of us are chasing philanthropic income," he adds.
Power cut blacks out 166 properties in Penrith area
Electricity North West says engineers hope to restore supplies to around 166 homes and businesses in the CA10 postcode area, to the south of Penrith, by noon.

It's been a right royal day for parts of Cumbria, with Prince Charles visiting the BAE shipyard , and later the Rosehill Theatre and the centre of Whitehaven .
On a sadder note, tributes were paid to councillor and former police officer Ray Cole , who died at the weekend.

Dancing teenager steps up to £33,000 fundraising challenge
A teenager from Kendal's trying to raise more than £33,000 so she can go to a sixth form that specialises in dance.
Sasha Johnson has been offered a place at Tring Park , which is unique in offering normal A Levels as well as a dance qualification. But has been unable to get a grant or a scholarship to pay for three years' boarding school.
Sasha's performed with the Ludus Dance company at Edinburgh Festival and national dance festivals and has been a member of the Northern Associates Cecchetti ballet since she was nine.
