  2. Analysis: What Westinghouse bankruptcy means for Cumbria nuclear plans

    Ben Maeder

    Journalist, BBC Radio Cumbria

The consortium behind Moorside,  NuGen, says that it's continuing to operate in a "business as usual" manner.

The joint venture is made up of French firm Engie, which holds a 40% stake, and Japan's Toshiba owns the rest.

Westinghouse is a Toshiba-owned US company that's due to manufacture three AP1000 reactors for Moorside. It has filed for US bankruptcy protection .

Toshiba has said that only Westinghouse's US operations would be affected by the bankruptcy filing - but it doesn't appear to have said anything concrete about Moorside.

The GMB union says that it's now time for the government to step in and end the uncertainty surrounding the whole project.

  8. Analysis: Moorside supplier files for US bankruptcy

    Theo Leggett

    BBC Business News Reporter

Westinghouse is a long established engineering company which constructed the United States' first commercial nuclear reactor in the 1950s.

It still provides technology for nuclear power stations around the world.

However, massive cost over-runs at power station projects in South Carolina and Georgia, as well as heavy losses linked to the takeover of another nuclear business in 2015, have brought it to the brink of collapse.

The bankruptcy filing will allow the company to continue operating while it renegotiates contracts and holds talks with its creditors.
