An experienced hotel owner says he believes he can make a go of running the old Atlantique Hotel at Perelle. 

Jamie le Friec will rename the hotel the Driftwood Inn and it will feature a bar, tea garden and budget accommodation. He believes his business plan will work.

Christmas came early yesterday for one local boy. Ernie Backlund-Leale is making great memories with his family and friends after receiving the news that he relapsed after a bone marrow transplant.  

Jersey overseas aid workers have praised the efforts of people in Rwanda for the work they've done to help themselves. 

Island representatives say that while Jersey money has helped to build schools and other facilities, local people have worked hard to raise money for building projects themselves. 

Staff at Health and Social Care in Guernsey have previously lacked the confidence to question how the committee is run. That's according to current president Deputy Heidi Soulsby.

She says she wants 2017 to be seen as a "year of innovation" for the Health Service. She says it's time for all staff to speak out about what should be done better.

The first building of the new Jersey International Finance Centre on the former Esplanade car park officially opens today.

Financial services company UBS is the main tenant of the Jersey Development Company building and says the new building is on a par with its offices in New York, Zurich and London. 

UBS says workers in the office, now called IFC 1, will benefit from adjustable height desks, breakout pods and lots of light.

The GSPCA has joined the States in urging dog owners to keep a very close eye on their pets when walking on the islands beaches.

Steve Byrne from the animal charity says palm oil deposits have been spotted on the beaches and if ingested can kill a dog.

He said: "The main problems if ingested are vomiting and diarrhoea and these can lead to dehydration, particularly in young or small dogs."

Jersey aid workers in Rwanda say work helping teachers learn English is as important as anything else they are doing. 

Jersey sends thousands of pounds to charities in the country, and a lot of it is spent on new school buildings.

As well as building a school and introducing the Jersey Cow to boost milk yields, workers say they have also employed people to give school teachers English lessons.

The country's government changed the second language from French to English recently and urged everyone to learn English.

Firefighters have tackled a tree fire in Guernsey.

The fire at Delancey Park was quickly put out by Guernsey Fire and Rescue Service.

About 1,500 litres of water was used.

Dog owners in Guernsey are being urged to keep pets away from any solid white waxy substance they might find on local beaches.

A member of the public reported what is thought to be palm oil deposits on Pembroke Beach over the weekend.

The States have said while the substance is not dangerous to humans it could pose a danger to dogs if it has gone rancid. The beach cleaning team are working to remove them.

Jersey's traffic officer says he is seriously concerned that drivers are not carrying out basic safety checks on their cars. 

Out of 339 vehicles stopped during a routine check, 12 drivers had faulty lights or tyre defects. 

Chris Le Maistre says people must regularly check their lights and tyres. He says there will be more checks throughout all parishes over the coming months. 

He said: "It is the responsibility of all drivers to ensure that their vehicles are in a road worthy condition". 

Provisional plans to dig out and restore a hidden Second World War flak battery emplacement at L’Ancresse are being drawn up by Festung Guernsey, the group dedicated to preserving the island’s German fortifications.  

Firefighters in Alderney have tackled a small van fire on Tourgis Hill this morning.

Two fire appliances attended at 09:52. There were no injuries and the incident was over by 11:00.

Politicians in Jersey are being urged to "respect the will of the people" as they are given a third chance to enact reforms approved in a referendum in 2013. It is in a proposition by Deputy Andrew Lewis.

Earlier this year politicians voted on reforms that would see senators removed and a change to six large deputy districts. This was amended to keep senators as well as the district changes. 

Deputy Andrew Lewis says as this change wasn't put to the public in a referendum, it shouldn't be introduced. He says his plans give politicians a "third chance" to enact reforms agreed on during the referendum.

The debate is on 2 May and if agreed the reforms will be in place before the next election in May 2018.

Three men from the UK have appeared in Jersey's Magistrates Court charged with drug-trafficking offences.

More than £160,000 worth of cannabis was seized from a "small boat" by customs in Jersey.

The drugs were found on Friday by police and customs officers in St Ouen's Bay.

Jersey Magistrates Court heard the accused men are from Blandford in Dorset, Farnham in Surrey, and Ringwood in Hampshire. They are being held in police custody.

Jersey Reds head coach Harvey Biljon told his squad he is "proud of their achievements" after their narrow defeat in Friday's British & Irish Cup final.

Jersey were 18 points up on Munster A in Cork, but the Irish side came back to win by just a point.
