St Helens coach Justin Holbrook on BBC Radio 5 Live:

"I was really confident in our side but in the end we've had to play well and we did - we've played like that all year.

"I knew Salford would not go away so I didn't expect us to blow them away early so all credit to them, they put on a great game."

  3. Coming up...

    FT: St Helens 23-6 Salford

If you think the rugby league season ends here then you're wrong.

The squad will be named on Monday ahead of two Tests against New Zealand, sandwiched by games against Tonga and Papua New Guinea.

All the action gets under way on Saturday, 26 October and you'll be able to follow every try, kick and tackle on the BBC across TV, radio and online.

Salford Red Devils captain Mark Flanagan on BBC Radio 5 Live:

"We hung in there early on and we were in the game at half-time but we gave the ball away too much in the second half and absorbed more pressure.

"We didn't help ourselves at times and if you give this Saints side chances they'll take them, they were outstanding tonight."

  5. 'Means everything to win with my hometown club'

    FT: ST Helens 26-6 Salford

St Helens half-back Jonny Lomax on BBC Radio 5 Live:

"I missed 2014 and it was gutting, I went through some dark times but it means everything to win it for my hometown club.

"We went well in the first 25-30 minutes and then they started to get on top of us but we worked hard."

St Helens last lifted the Super League trophy five years ago when they beat Wigan in a final best remembered for Ben Flower's sending off.

There was no controversy about this victory as Saints led from start to finish.

Coach Justin Holbrook is the last to collect his medal before James Roby comes up to lift the trophy which confirms that ST HELENS ARE SUPER LEAGUE CHAMPIONS 2019.

    FT: St Helens 23-6 Salford

    Phil Cartwright

    BBC Sport at Old Trafford

Jackson Hastings has just completed a post-match interview and then went straight over to the Salford fans.

They've taken to him so well over the past 18 months and he has responded by helping Salford to the brink of the impossible.

It's Wigan next in 2020 for Hastings - they're getting one hell of a player.

  9. Salford collect their medals

    FT: St Helens 23-6 Salford

  11. Post update

    FT: St Helens 23-6 Salford

    St Helens v Salford

It was a thoroughly deserved victory by St Helens, who have been the best side in Super League this season.

Tries from Morgan Knowles and Zeb Taia put them on course.

And although Jake Bibby gave Salford hope before half-time, Saints' game management of the second half was impressive as Mark Percival's try, two Lachlan Coote penalties and Tommy Makinson's memorable drop-goal confirmed victory.

  12. 'Job done for Saints'

    FT: St Helens 26-6 Salford

    Kevin Brown

England international half-back on BBC Radio 5 Live

St Helens set the foundations early with a relentless game, it was massive for Saints to get that legend status for the coach so it's job done.

    FT: St Helens 23-6 Salford

    Iestyn Harris

Former Great Britain and Wales international on BBC Radio 5 Live

You can see the reaction when the hooter went from both teams, elation from St Helens and Salford just collapsed to the floor.

It was a terrific performance from St Helens and well done.

  14. Thompson wins man the match

    FT: St Helens 23-6 Salford

St Helens prop Luke Thompson has been named as winner of the Harry Sunderland trophy for man of the match.

Thompson has been immense against both Wigan and Salford in the play-offs. The award is fully deserved.

  15. 'There's little in sport like it'

    FT: St Helens 23-6 Salford

    Phil Cartwright

    BBC Sport at Old Trafford

    St Helens v Salford

The contrast between the body language of the winners and losers on nights like this - there's little in sport like it.

Salford's players are all flat on their backs. St Helens' players are jumping around as you'd expect champions to do, while Alex Walmsley sprints the length of the field to celebrate in front of the Saints' fans.

He shows such speed, he looks like he could go another 80 minutes.

  16. BreakingSt Helens are Super League champions

    FT: St Helens 23-6 Salford

Justin Holbrook's parting gift to St Helens is the Super League trophy as he now heads off to take over at NRL side Gold Coast.

St Helens are Grand Final winners for a sixth time.

  17. Full time: St Helens 23-6 Salford

    St Helens v Salford

It's all over. The hooter goes. St Helens are Super League champions.

  18. DROP-GOAL: St Helens 23-6 Salford

    Tommy Makinson

Two minutes to go and Tommy Makinson let's fly with a long-range drop-goal attempt that takes a deflection and still flies between the sticks.

That score owed much to Alex Walmsley who carried two Salford players with him on the burst to set up the field position.

  19. Post update

It's all about playing error-free rugby for St Helens now. Do nothing stupid in these closing minutes and they will be Super League champions for the seventh time.
