  3. Cumbrian man calling for benefit system overhaul

A North Cumbrian man is leading calls for the government to make changes to the benefits system for people with disabilities.

David Gale has muscular dystrophy and used a motability car to travel from Dumfries to work in Carlisle.

He lost this car following a reassessment of his Personal Independence Payment so used his own savings to pay for a replacement car.

Despite successfully appealing against the reassessment, he says he's now locked into the payment plan for his replacement car.

He's now started a petition calling for claimants to keep their motability vehicles until the appeals process has been completed.

The government says there are more people on the Motability scheme now than in 2010.

  4. South Korean firm could step in at Moorside says nuclear professor

A South Korean company could back a proposed nuclear power station in West Cumbria.

It's after more financial problems have emerged at Toshiba, which is the only company left with a stake in Moorside developer NuGen.

Professor Francis Livens, director of the Dalton Nuclear Institute, told BBC Radio Cumbria this morning that it would be possible for the South Korean company Kepco to take a stake in Moorside.

However, he said that the firm might want to use a different reactor design instead of the planned Westinghouse AP1000 which is produced by Toshiba's US arm.

Quote Message: The Koreans can certainly build these things. The question would be whether they would wish, or choose, to build the AP1000 design or whether, actually, if they bought in they would look to build a different design. Because that would delay the project, the new design would need regulatory approval. from Professor Francis Livens Director, Dalton Nuclear Institute

The UK Government says the Business Secretary Greg Clark visited South Korea last week for talks on future collaboration, including on potential civil nuclear projects.

Cumbria Police asked two 15-year-olds to try buying alcohol from nine pubs across Ulverston as part of a wider operation targeting crime and disorder in the south of the county.

Quote Message: I would like to congratulate all nine premises on passing the test purchasing operation. All licence holders and premises supervisors in Cumbria should take note and ensure that their staff are challenging those who they suspect are under the legal age to purchase alcohol. from Sgt Rupert Johnston Cumbria Police

A man who is walking the length of Hadrian's Wall with his pet ferret is only eight miles away from Carlisle.

Charlie Hammerton and his pet Bandit set off on the challenge to raise funds to help fight motor neurone disease, which killed Charlie's mother.

The pair started their journey from Tyneside on Monday and it seems all the walking has taken its toll as Charlie had to buy a new pair of boots after suffering from a badly bruised and swollen ankle. The 22-year-old said: "My new walking shoes are helping and we are making good progress, lots of people are supporting us along the way."

Bandit is keeping strong and doing well.

The club are now two places and two points outside the play-offs with a game in hand.

Quote Message: It's just very important that we take care of Saturday and we don't get ahead of ourselves and look too far ahead. As my colleague Ben Maeder has seen this morning, "the nail" is an extendable piece of metal that is inserted into a leg bone during surgery at the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven.
