Premier League: Man Utd defeat Chelsea

Romelu Lukaku speaking to MOTD: "Its a good day for me [getting a goal and an assist] and we won so that's the most important thing.

"To get the winner would have been even better for me, but to get the goal before half time was really important for us. We showed our qualities and our desire in the second half.

"It was a good, intense game to play in, with a bit of skill here and there, I think the neutral fan would have enjoyed it today."

On receiving praise from his manager: "It's great when any manager talks about you, but when it's Jose Mourinho it's extra special, I just have to remain humble, and keep working hard for the team."

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It is not special because it is Chelsea, it is very special as we beat the champions, who are a fantastic team, who are very difficult to beat and because this is the three points that keep us in second place which is the place we are fighting for.

"It opens a little gap, not much to Chelsea, and it is a very important result for us. It feels special as the players gave everything. It is not possible to win against a team with the quality of Chelsea without the quality we gave.

"We did not start well, Chelsea started much better, but we found our position on the pitch and found our concentration and we grew up throughout the game."

I still don't know why Eden Hazard was taken off. It's weird, I don't think Antonio Conte was asked.

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "We had a great chance to get a good result against Manchester United, but instead we talk about a defeat.

"You must be the best team at the end of the game, not just in the first half. We had a great chance to take three points here. Now we have to start to work this season as the league is very difficult and we need to fight for a place in the Champions League. I hope the players realise this soon.

"Luck is important for every team, but this season we have not been so lucky. It is disappointing after this performance to finish with a defeat."

More from Danny Drinkwater: "I didn't see Spurs' game, I was concentrated on ours, but it's down to us now, we have to get our results in order and hopefully the other results will look after themselves."

Khan: Feel bad for Conte, the wrongly disallowed goal could get him sacked. That's linesman's influence on the game and someone's life. VAR is badly needed.

Dave: Chelsea season much better if Conte had gone & Costa had stayed. Morata not up to it.

Danny Drinkwater speaking to MOTD: "We definitely deserved more, first half we were dominant. First half was more even, but we didn't deserve to lose that match, no way.

"Obviously there are bits we can improve on, first of all we can improve on not conceding, and scoring more goals, but football can sometimes go against you and today's one of those days."

On the Morata disallowed goal: "I've not watched it back - was it onside? It's one of them, we've just got to look forward to the next game now."

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte, speaking to Sky Sports: "I think the draw was the fair result for this game. But we are talking about a defeat and that's all.

"I must be honest, I didn't see the situation, but if you're telling me Alvaro Morata wasn't offside, I think VAR is very important, especially in England. There are a lot of moments in the game where there are things to super-check.

"We had to be more clinical, instead we kept the game open, and the opponent made us pay. Manchester United are a great team, and we must be disappointed, because I repeat today, we could have done better.

"We know there is a battle [for the top four] and it will be difficult to find a place in the Champions League."

Tei: Huge performance from Lukaku up top. I didn't think he had it in him anymore.

Abdul: Chelsea were robbed of a point, that was a clear goal and clear onside.

Antonio Conte is asked whether he thinks Chelsea deserved a draw. There is an exhalation that borders on laughing in disbelief. "Yeah..."

It looked like Alvaro Morata wasn't offside for the goal that was disallowed late in the game. It would have brought the Blues back at 2-2.

"I think there should be a super-check," Conte says when asked about VAR.

"He is a fantastic player, a player that is a modern midfield player, he can do everything. The only thing he's not doing yet is scoring goals, which he can, the only reason he isn't is because of the job I am giving him. I think in the future he can, we saw that in pre-season, bu I am very happy with him today.

"I don't like to individualise, Nemanja Matic also played very well in midfield, and the defenders too, and Alexis Sanchez made a huge effort too. In the second half we were more confident, I think if anyone deserved the win, it was us."

Manchester United Jose Mourinho speaking to Sky Sports: "We beat a fantastic team, for some reason they were the champions last season, and for some reason they played well against Barcelona, and for some reason they started the game very well. So, we beat a very good team, we had to be organised, everybody had to follow the game plan and have spirit. We beat a very good team.

"They started very well and when they hit the post, I was looking at my players, what can we do, who can I blame, but it was such a lovely move, we couldn't stop it.

"But we found a way to play against them, and we had a good control of Eden Hazard. Willian is an amazing player and he killed us with the goal. But we had more control of the game than them, without creating lots of chances."

Chelsea slip down to fifth after Tottenham's win at Crystal Palace.

A slightly rambling Jose Mourinho says his side "deserved" to beat a "phenomenal" Chelsea side. It's "special but not because it's Chelsea".

Manchester United goalscorer Romelu Lukaku: "We had to work really hard for that win, we were well prepared and we we did our best today.

"At the end of the day I just want to work hard for the team, and if I improve I'm really satisfied."

Does the critisim affect you? "Not really. I always work hard, so to get the three points is great for us."

Teammate Scott McTominay added: "I'm fearless, and I just want to get on the pitch as much as I can now. They've got brilliant players all over the pitch but I think everyone of us put in a massive shift today.

"When we went behind, we had to chase the game a bit. But in the second half we were completely in control.

"I'm really enjoying my football at the moment, it's great to be playing in the Premier League and the Champions League regularly, but at the end of the day it's a really good three points for the team."

Just two touches for Paul Pogba in the Chelsea box - but plenty more down attacking positions on the left. He was a lot more influential today.
