A former scout leader from Cumbria has been jailed for historic sex abuse.

Norman Thompson, now of Belted Will Close, Wigton, admited abusing seven boys, the youngest of whom was nine years old, between 1984 and 2000.   

The judge sentenced Thompson, 66, to 16 years in prison.

Det Insp Ralph Henderson from Cumbria Police said: “Firstly I would like to thank the victims in this case who have shown great courage in talking to detectives, decades after the abuse occurred. Without their bravery in coming forward and speaking about these terrible offences, Thompson would likely have never faced justice for his actions.

He said that Thompson "abused the position he held" as a scout leader and  throughout the investigation showed "a lack of remorse for his actions and the impact they have had on the lives of the men who endured the abuse".

North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust says it has been affected by the cyber attack but it is working as normal.

Carlisle United has voted in favour of keeping Premier League and Championship academy sides in the Checkatrade Trophy, despite acknowledging that was not what their fans wanted. 

The club's vote contributed to a 66.6% majority from EFL clubs, which means the competition will stay in it's current format - with a few changes. 

In a statement today, the club's board said: "We know the views of fans - that is crystal clear, but putting the extra money to good use we can make the club better in the long run. 

"That said, we are all realistic. The competition must find a way to reconnect with fans to have any sustainable future beyond the next two years, and there is a lot of work to do."

NHS Digital has released a statement about the attack which is affecting a number of NHS service across England including the Cumberland Infirmary.

It says: "A number of NHS organisations have reported to NHS Digital that they have been affected by a ransomware attack which is affecting a number of different organisations.

"The investigation is at an early stage but we believe the malware variant is Wanna Decryptor.

"At this stage we do not have any evidence that patient data has been accessed. 

"We will continue to work with affected organisations to confirm this.

"NHS Digital is working closely with the National Cyber Security Centre, the Department of Health and NHS England to support affected organisations and to recommend appropriate mitigations.

"This attack was not specifically targeted at the NHS and is affecting organisations from across a range of sectors.

"Our focus is on supporting organisations to manage the incident swiftly and decisively, but we will continue to communicate with NHS colleagues and will share more information as it becomes available."

The Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle is one of a number affected by today's IT failure which is believed to be caused by a large-scale cyber attack.

Trusts and hospitals in London, Blackburn, Nottinghamand Hertfordshire have also been affected.

GPs are resorting to using pen and paper, according to newspaper the Blackpool Gazette, and phone and IT systems have been shut down.

NHS England says they are aware of the issue and are looking into it.

Cumberland Infirmary is currently undergoing computer problems. 

The trust that runs the Carlisle hospital and the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven says it can't give further details at the moment.

Lowther Street in Carlisle has re-opened after this morning's accident.

An air ambulance service that's flown thousands of missions in Cumbria is celebrating 15 years of saving lives this weekend. 

The Great North Air Ambulance Service has a helicopter base at Langwathby near Penrith. It costs more than £4.5m pounds to run the service every year and is funded entirely from charitable donations.

A former scout leader from Cumbria has been jailed for historic sex abuse.

Norman Thompson admited abusing seven boys, the youngest of whom was nine years old, between 1984 and 2000.   

Carlisle Crown Court was told that during trips to the Lake District and abroad, he abused them, took pictures, and showed them child pornography - actions described by the prosecution as the "grooming behaviour of a predatory paedophile".

The judge described Thompson, now 66, as a "disturbing and manipulative man" and sentenced him to 16 years in prison.

A South Cumbrian company has won a top award from the Federation of Small Businesses. 

Kendal Nutricare was named UK Business of the Year 2017 and also picked up the Exporter of the Year accolade.

The company's Kendamil infant formula is expected to go on sale in 150 Morrisons supermarkets next month. 

We've received further information about this morning's crash on Lowther Street in Carlisle.

A motocyclist suffered minor injuries when he was involved in a collision with a car at about 10:30. 

The road is closed between Drovers Lane and Victoria Place while the recovery of the vehicles is on-going.

Police ask people to avoid the area if possible.
