Brighton's Anthony Knockaert is named Championship Player of the Year

Anthony Knockaert has scored 13 goals and provided eight assists in 40 Championship games this season

Brighton winger Anthony Knockaert has been named the EFL's Championship Player of the Year.

The 25-year-old Frenchman has scored 13 goals in 40 games to help Brighton to the top of the table.

Sheffield United striker Billy Sharp, 31, and Doncaster Rovers striker John Marquis, 24, won the respective League One and League Two awards in London.

Exeter City forward Ollie Watkins, 21, received the Young Player of the Year award.

Brighton midfielder Steve Sidwell won the prize for Goal of the Year for his sensational 50-yard lob against Bristol City in November.

Knockaert beat Leeds United's New Zealand striker Chris Wood, 25, and Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle, 26, to claim the award.

Wood and Gayle are the top two leading scorers in the second-tier with 24 and 22 goals respectively.

Former Birmingham City and Peterborough United boss Barry Fry, 72, was honoured with the Contribution to League Football Award, recognising his lifetime service to the professional game.

"I've been to Wembley four times and won every time," said Fry.

"I've won play-off games, I've won leagues, I've won cups but to get this honour is the greatest achievement I've ever been awarded and thank you very much to the English Football League."

Brentford's Kevin O'Connor picked up the Sir Tom Finney Award.

The honour, named after former England and Preston North End forward Finney, is presented to a player who has had an exceptional career in the EFL.

O'Connor made 501 first-team appearances in 16 years for the Bees and now works in a backroom role at Brentford.

    However much they do in the community they haven't addressed the problems in he stands.

    Once again PL supporters are knocking the EFL. Why? Your own club is only 1 division away. Great for John Marquis, hope you can do it again next season, and very pleased for Billy Sharp. These are proper footballer and not overpaid prima donnas.

    Who actually votes for these!? Millwall as family club of the year? And the rest just seems like total favouritism towards Brighton. Only worthy winner I see is Billy Sharp. On that note well done lad. Score a few against Sunderland for me next season haha.

    I don't understand why these awards take place during the season? There are still 5 league games left and then the play-offs to contend with. Plenty of time for teams in relegation & promotion spots to change.

    Knockaert - gifted player who has won us (Brighton) lots of points this year. His play acting is a bit embarrassing sometimes though! Dale Stephens would have been my choice from the Brighton ranks

    On another thread here, Most No2's who step up seem to fail but there is one who looks to really be on the way to being a good No1 & that is Chris Hughton at Brighton!, I think that he will get Brighton up this Season & they will stay up for at least a Season & Good luck to them from an Envious Wolves Fan!.

    How is there no place for Tom Cairney, with 9 goals & 11 assists while orchestrating the second highest scorers in the Championship (with highest possession, shots per game & passing accuracy)?

    Also if you going to put this into a team format (rather than a list), just go with a 4-4-2: you would never play a front three of Sharp, Gayle & Wood.
