  2. Cumbria's weather: Dry but chilly with a chance of frost

    It will stay dry this evening and overnight but it will soon turn chilly. Under the clearest skies a frost is likely, especially in the north towards Carlisle.

  3. Marina village gets back on course as work starts on new housing project

    A ceremony has been held to mark the start of initial work towards creating a Marina Village of new housing in Barrow's docklands.

    The development is part of a £100m set of projects that stalled at the start of the austerity cuts in 2010, but the diggers have now moved in to begin the work. 

    Dave Pidduck (centre, with shovel), the Labour Leader of Barrow Council which is behind the project, says this is a key stage in the scheme.

  4. St John caravan stolen from Coniston quarry

    A caravan being used by St John Ambulance volunteers who were staffing a first aid post at Hodge Close Quarry near Coniston at the weekend found it was stolen when they returned on Sunday morning at 11:00.

    It had been unattended since 15:00 on Saturday.

  5. Nursing student wins awards for work on mental health stigma

    A nursing student at the University of Cumbria has won a national award for helping to reduce stigma around mental health. 

    Zoe Butler, from Kendal, worked with young people to write and film educational materials used in schools as part of a project called The Hot Potato. 

    She was given the Andrew Parker Student Nurse Award at the 2017 Royal College of Nursing Inspiration Awards - she's in the centre of the presentation photograph below.

  6. Former scoutmaster admits indecently assaulting boys

    A former scoutmaster has pleaded guilty to 10 charges of indecently assaulting boys between 1984 and 2000.

    Norman Thompson, 66, of Belted Will Close, Wigton, had previously admitted 19 other indecent assault charged and one of making indecent photographs.

    Thompson, who'll be sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court on Friday, was allowed conditional bail to allow him to "get his affairs in order".

    But Judge Peter Davies told him: "You can't understand there'll be anything other than a custodial sentence."

    A little more about the lack of rain over the past couple of months - Trevor Earthy sent us this picture of the River Derwent in Cockermouth.

    The water company United Utilities says the reservoirs are reasonably full, but those on private water supplies are starting to economise.

  8. Firefighters called in after smoke detected in station basement

    Carlisle station was evacuated and trains were not allowed to stop there after what the fire service describes as "heavy smoke-logging" was detected in a basement.

    Train services were delayed for up to 45 minutes at one point, but Virgin trains now says there are only "residual" delays.

    Trains through Carlisle may be delayed or even cancelled until 17:00 this afternoon after smoke was detected in a basement at the station.

  11. Russian superyacht moors up in Whitehaven

    This superyacht is turning a few heads in Whitehaven. The Lady M is thought to be one of the most luxurious pleasure craft ever to visit the port.

    Lady M belongs to the Russian billionaire Alexey Mordashov, who made his money in steel and mining. She's 213ft long, has a crew of 14 and can entertain up to 12 passengers with facilities including a helipad.

    Her reputed value is $55m (£42.4m).

  12. Poppi inquest: Legal aid delay 'unfortunate in the extreme'

    The Cumbria coroner, David Roberts, has made it clear that he's angry with the way the Legal Aid Authority has handled the case of Paul Worthington.

    Today he announced he was delaying a renewed inquest into the death of the Barrow toddler in 2012 because the authority had only just decided to grant Mr Worthington legal aid, after refusing three applications.

    His statement makes it clear there's been a lengthy legal tussle over whether Mr Worthington should be given aid

    Mr Roberts said it was "unfortunate in the extreme" that the decision to grant legal aid "was not made, on apparently identical facts and circumstances, many months ago."

    The authority has been approached for a response, and we'll bring it to you when it lands.

  13. Curle wants to see 10,000 greet Exeter at Brunton Park

    Carlisle United have sold almost 3,000 tickets for Sunday's League Two playoff semi-final, first-leg against Exeter at Brunton Park.

    That's almost a 3rd of the way to the 10,000, minimum that the manager Keith Curle says he wants to see at the game. 

    The club expect around 15,000 tickets will be available for the game, if required.

  14. Sean 'the beard' Conway adds Lakes cycling challenge to his extreme adventures

    One of Britain's best-known adventurers joined 2,500 cyclists riding 112 miles around the Lake District's highest mountain passes at the weekend in the Fred Whitton Challenge.

    Sean Conway's magnificent beard has become his trademark as he completes extraordinary feats like the world's longest trialthlon, which involved swimming, running and cycling the length of Britain.

    Most of those pedalling their way up one-in-four hills like Wrynose pass wore Lycra.  Sean, as you can see, decided to dress down, in shorts and a check shirt.

  15. Free Whitehaven pitch for would-be market traders

    Would-be market traders are being invited to have a go at selling their wares for free.

    To celebrate the national "Love Your Local Market" campaign, Copeland Borough Council is offering a pitch at Whitehaven Market on 18, 20, 25, and 27 May, at no charge.

    Those selected will be provided with a stall, so all they need to do is bring along the products they wish to sell.

  16. Queue builds for Carlisle play-off tickets

    Those tickets are still going like hot cakes down at Brunton Park; there could be a capacity 15,414 crowd for Sunday's promotion play-off against Exeter.

  17. Mountain biker flown to hospital after forest crash

    A 15-year-old boy suffered multiple injuries in a mountain bike crash in Whinlatter Forest.

    Volunteers from the Keswick mountain rescue team gave initial first aid and then called for help from a Coastguard helicopter that was refuelling after other rescues in the area.

    The aircraft, Rescue 936, landed in a narrow forest road, and the boy was flown to the Royal Preston Hospital for treatment.

  19. Lovebirds fly in from Africa

    A romantic tryst awaited BBC Radio Cumbria reporter John Bowness when he went to interview a member of the Sedbergh Community Swifts group this morning.

    The group provides special nesting boxes for the birds, which spend almost all their lives on the wing apart from when they are breeding.

  20. Businesses work on plan to restore derelict Carlisle hotel

    There's a new plan to turn a derelict Victorian building in Carlisle back into an hotel.

    Carlisle City Council has spent more than £150,000 on shoring up the Central Plaza Hotel by Carlisle City Council since it closed in 2004. 

    Now, the Carlisle City Centre business group says it wants to turn the site into an hotel with 56 beds, bar, restaurant and a heritage centre, which would tell the story of Carlisle's state management of pubs, which started during the First World War and lasted until the 1970s.
