York's taxi drivers have called off their joining in of a national protest today over what they call "wild west" regulation.

Members of the GMB union say they're trying to protect the taxi and private hire industries.

The union claims cities like York are being flooded at weekends with private hire vehicles which aren't licensed to work in the area.

They've also raised issues about safeguarding and want local taxis to have better protection.

Last January hackney and private hire drivers held a mass rally to express their concern about UBER drivers coming into the city to work.

A spokesperson from the GMB Union says the York drivers are not taking part as a sign of respect for those affected by the Manchester Arena explosion.

The main political parties have all suspended general election campaigning following the fatal bombing in Manchester.

Some candidates in the East Midlands have been posting their messages of condolence on Twitter...

Police in Manchester say 22 people have been killed and 59 others wounded in an explosion at a pop concert attended by thousands of teenagers.

One man, acting alone, is thought to have carried out a suicide attack.

Rachel from Barnsley told BBC Radio Manchester she was in Block 213 of Manchester Arena.

She was with her 14-year-old daughter. To avoid the usual delays exiting the arena at the end of a show they decided to make their way out just before the end.

"As we were going out we heard an almighty bang. At first I thought we'd missed something in the concert.

"As we turned around the corner there was an horrific stampede of people coming down the steps, people falling on floor.

"I grabbed my daughter and we just ran."

Twenty-two people, including children, are now known to have been killed in a suspected terror attack at Manchester Arena. Another 59 were injured.

The blast happened around 22:35 BST on Monday at the end of a concert by the US singer Ariana Grande.

Greater Manchester Police said the lone male attacker, who died in the blast, was carrying an improvised explosive device which he detonated.

Professor Paul Rodgers is a peace studies expert at Bradford University.

He says people need to help each other through the experience:

York's Labour candidate, Rachel Maskell, said: "Simply horrific. I pray for all those impacted by this terrible attack."

Leeds Central's Hilary Benn said: "All our thoughts are with the families and friends of those killed and injured by the terrible explosion at the Manchester Arena."

Leeds West candidate Rachel Reeves tweeted:

And Sheffield candidate Gill Furnis has said; "My deepest thoughts are with the families of those who have lost loved ones and those injured in Manchester. It is a horrifying situation."

All the main parties have agreed to suspend election campaigning.

Rail services in our region are affected by the explosion at Manchester Arena last night.

Manchester Victoria station is closed, trains will be diverted into Manchester Piccadilly.

Virgin Trains East Coast say: "We are currently accepting @TPExpressTrains tickets on all services between Newcastle and York.

Northern Trains say they are providing as many trains as possible today, though there may be amendments and delays.

CrossCountry trains say they are running services to Manchester Piccadilly, but expect to be busier than usual.

Several rail routes from Yorkshire to Lancashire will be affected today as emergency services deal with last night's events at Manchester Arena.

As Manchester Victoria is located near the arena, the station will remain closed and no trains will operate.

If you were due to head across the Pennines it's worth checking before you travel.

Routes affected include Northern between Huddersfield, Leeds and York.
