  2. Morrissey biopic to close Edinburgh film festival

    Smiths fans in the band's hometown might want to think about booking a train even further north this summer as the film about the early years of Morrissey is to have its world premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.

    England is Mine is set in 1970s Manchester and focuses on the teenage Steven Morrissey.

    So the logical move is to debut it in Scotland.

    Scots actor Jack Lowden plays the frustrated would-be star as he dreams of a music career while working in his local tax office.

    The festival's artistic director called the singer "one of Britain's most iconic artists."

  4. Alice Cooper announces first UK tour in five years

    It's time to dig out your guy-liner and leathers as Alice Cooper is coming to town for the first time in five years.

    The veteran shock rocker is set to release Paranormal, his new album, which sees him reunited with his original Alice Cooper band, in July.

    The album, Alice's first in six years will feature guest appearances from U2’s Larry Mullen Jr, ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons and Deep Purple’s Roger Glover.

    He's set to play five UK dates in Leeds, Glasgow, Birmingham, Manchester and London in November.

    In a very modern (and increasingly annoying) manner Ohio indie rockers The National have been teasing us all lately, with mysterious video snippets suggesting new music.

    Now they've finally come good on their promise by dropping an actual song with a jarring drone-shot video.

    The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness is taken from their forthcoming album Sleep Well Beast with is out on 8 September.

    Watch above but be warned there are strange flashing colours.

    There he goes. There he goes again...

    Time for a break and a little lunchtime musical park stroll now...

    He's generally up for anything and now a French website have got Canadian slacker rock icon Mac DeMarco to stroll through a Paris park playing songs from his new album This Old Dog on an acoustic guitar.

    The American explains at the start of the video how the Scouse rock 'n' rollers had influenced his track Still Beating.

    He says: "I was listening to this band from the UK called the La's.

    "They have that song, There She Goes. I wanted to write a song like that, so I tried. It doesn't sound anything like that. But now I've got my own song."

    He makes some new French friends along the way too. Kind of.

  11. Ozzy is a Music Day ambassador...

    Be afraid, be very afraid.

    The Prince of Darkness has been unveiled as one of this year's participants in the year's annual event.

    A surprise event will take place in his hometown Birmingham with similar events taking place in the home cities of Shaun Ryder and Alfie Boe. 

    Elsewhere, Texas are playing with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in a free concert from Glasgow's Barrowlands and more than 45 official new blue plaques will be unveiled to commemorate significant locations in music history.

    Each BBC local radio station has chosen one for their area.

    Almost 50,000 school pupils will play a classical piece at their school assembly while, in Bradford, 800 children will attempt to break the world record for Tamboo Bamboo.

    $810m (£626m) to be exact.

    Well, that is according to Forbes which says his fortune jumped 30% last year.

    But Jay's healthy bank balance it still isn't enough to dethrone Sean "Diddy" Combs from the top of the magazine's annual list of the world's richest hip-hop artists.

    Diddy retained his number one spot with an estimated net worth of $820m (£633m).

  14. Rolling Stones explain lack of UK tour dates...

    There was outrage online this week after the Stones announced a new European tour without a single UK date on the list.

    Now, the band have posted the above message on social media saying the reason for the UK snub was due to pesky sports fixtures and being unable to find big enough available venues.

    It said: "Sorry to our UK fans there are no UK dates on this run,due to lack of available venues because of sporting fixtures. Hope to be here in 2018."

  15. Tove Styrke is on a 'self-love' kind of vibe

    Earlier this week we told you about Swedish star Tove Styrke and her puzzling way of writing pop tunes.

    Well here is a new one to sample, and it comes complete with a dazzling colourful video.

    She told music reporter Mark Savage about the visuals for Say My Name, explaining: "It’s very colourful and we’ve used a lot of tricks – like optic tricks with mirrors.

    "I really love using mirrors, because I can sing into the camera through a mirror, and that way I’m looking at both the audience and also on myself. 

    "It’s a self-love, self-appreciation kind of vibe."

  16. Madonna is a 'movie killer' says stage legend

    "She's dead behind the eyes. She couldn't act her way out of a paper bag." 

    Wowsers, Broadway legend Patti Lupone didn't give Madonna an inch when she critiqued her Golden Globe-nominated role as Eva Peron in the 1996 movie Evita.

    The multi Emmy and Grammy-winning stage actress took a swipe at the Material Girl on an episode of US chat show Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen.

    The role of Peron was originally played by Lupone on Broadway in 1979. 

    She told Cohen: "She's a wonderful performer for what she does, but she is not an actress.

    "Madonna is a movie killer."

  17. Glasto 2017: Emily Eavis is keeping 'really big secret' from us

    Oh Emily you're such a tease.

    The Glastonbury festival co-organiser says there's "really big" secret on the way about this year's festival.

    But she won't tell us what it is.

    Radiohead, Foo Fighters and Ed Sheeran are headlining the Worthy Farm event, which takes place at the end of June.

    Emily told Newsbeat that they've managed to keep a secret quiet for the first time ever this time.

    "I haven't even hinted or told anyone it's coming and we've managed to keep it completely quiet for the first time ever."

  18. Sub Focus shares Hottest new collaboration with Alma

    Dance producer Sub Focus is back with a new record featuring young Finnish singer-songwriter ALMA.

    ALMA's look could rival that of some of the Eurovision entrants of years gone by (scroll down).

    Don't You Feel It was Mistajam's Hottest Record last night. 

    "I really loved her writing and vibe and style and stuff," said Sub - whose real name is Nick Douwma, "and it's cool it came together.

    "She wrote a great tune man."

  19. Thom Yorke to score horror movie

    Radiohead's Thom Yorke is making his first move into the world of feature film soundtracks.

    Following in bandmate Johnny Greenwood's footsteps (Let Their Be Blood, We Need To Talk About Kevin) he's to score the re-make of Italian horror movie Suspiria, starring Tilda Swinton and Dakota Johnson.

    The film's director Luca Guadgnino confirmed that Yorke would help him with his "re-imagining" of Dario Argento's 1977 horror classic.  

    *Fun musical fact: Argento himself was in a band called Goblin.

    The director said: "Thom's art transcends the contemporary.

    "To have the privilege of his music and sound for Suspiria is a dream come true."

    He added: "Thom's art transcends the contemporary. To have the privilege of his music and sound for Suspiria is a dream come true."
