The Barrow Inshore lifeboat, Vision of Tamworth, towed a fishing boat to safety early this morning after its engine failed in the Walney Channel.

The crew was alerted just after midnight, and quickly took the 27ft fishing boat under tow because the tide was at its highest, and that part of the channel only has enough water for boats to pass at high tide.

The fishing boat was safely moored within the hour.

Four Green candidates in Cumbria have now stood aside, saying they don't want to split the vote against the Conservatives.

Ian Rodham, who was going to stand in Westmorland and Lonsdale was the latest; the Green Party had already said it would not stand in Carlisle, Workington or Copeland.

Green candidates are standing in Eden and Barrow.

It's often forgotten that the steamers that cruise Windermere started life as part of a railway company and were part of British Rail until privatisation in the last century.

But Philip, who's chair of the Friends of Real Lancashire, whose borders extended to the Lake District, hadn't forgotten when he heard the news this morning.

We've more on developments at Stobart Group, where the chief executive, Andrew Tinkler, has announced he's stepping down this summer.

He'll be replaced by Warwick Brady, who until last summer was chief operating officer of easyJet.

Stobart group has been developing its aviation interests for several years; it owns Carlisle and Southend Airports, running flights for Aer Lingus regional and Flybe.

Today Andrew Tinkler said he hoped to see passenger flights from Carlisle Airport next summer.

A Cumberland FA referee, Anthony Backhouse, will be the one in the middle in black at a Wembley play-off on Sunday, the first such official from the association to officiate at the national stadium.

Anthony, who lives near Carlisle, started refereeing at 14, and gave up playing football at 18 to concentrate on keeping order.

He will officiate at a Vanarama National League play off final, between Tranmere Rovers and Forest Green Rovers.

A youth who attempted to exchange counterfeit currency is being sought by Cumbria Police

It follows a number of calls to the force from shop owners in the Windermere area on Wednesday morning.

All reported that the a young male, aged around 13, entering their stores, selected low-value goods and attempted to pay with a counterfeit £20 Scottish banknote.

He is described as 5ft tall, with brown hair which was swept to one side, and spoke with an Irish accent.

Passenger flights from Carlisle Airport will start next summer, according to Andrew Tinkler, who's announced he's stepping down as chief executive of the Stobart Group after ten years. 

Mr Tinkler will remain with the logistics firm, heading up the new acquisitions arm Stobart Capital when he steps down in June.

Mr Tinkler said the firm hoped to develop offices and the runway over the winter with a view to starting flights in about a year's time.

The pair were part of the team that won the Cumbria Cup.

A man caught with cocaine stuffed inside his underpants has been detained for eight months.

Tyler Joseph Wilson was stopped by police while driving near Dearham in August.

Two bags of the cocaine were recovered from the glove box of his car, with a further five found in his boxer shorts.

The 20-year-old - who is currently serving a term for burglary - admitted possessing the Class A drug with intent to supply.

On hearing he was making "significant" progress" while incarcerated, the judge at Carlisle Crown Court sentenced him to an eight-month term at a young offender institution .

The Nightstop Cumbria service, which involves volunteers providing shelter for homeless youngsters, has provided 47 young people with 208 bed-nights in its first two years.

Sharon Jackson, the co-ordinator, said there were eight households across the county, with three volunteer drivers to provide transport, but they still had to turn people away on occasion, particularly in Barrow.

"Our volunteers do an amazing job, but we need more," she said.

After a couple of weeks with a nagging north-easterly wind, it's fallen calm in the Lake District, which meant some mirror-like reflections on the smaller tarns and pools.

A craftsman from Kendal will be representing the UK against the best in the world at cabinet making.

Angus Gardner, who was selected after a process that lasted four days, will be competing against people from 25 other countries for the WorldSkills Finals in Abu Dhabi later this year.  

During the selection contest the 22-year-old had to create a cabinet to exact plans, and was marked on the overall quality, as well as his cutting of joints and working to precise measurements.

He's learned his skills in Kendal, but works for a cabinet-making firm in Hexham.

Final formalities have taken place to licence the new management at the troubled South Lakes Safari zoo, at Dalton in Furness.

The zoo's founder, David Gill, relinquished his licence today and dropped an appeal again two refusals to renew it, after a series of critical reports and controversies.

Officials at Barrow Town Hall have passed a new one to staff from Cumbria Zoo Co Ltd, the new management team that earlier this year won the approval of inspectors.

Cumbria's highway patrol is watching out for those whose tinting's so dark they can't see other traffic properly.

The Windermere-based Lake District Holocaust Project, which has created a museum and archive about the care given in the area to child survivors of the Nazi concentration camps, has won a £10,000 grant towards a much bigger educational scheme.

The project's displays at Windermere Library now attract about 40,000 visitors a year to see photos and other memorabilia from the few months that 300 child survivors of the camps spent recovering near Windermere in 1945.

But Trevor Avery, who founded it, says there's a wider interest about the wartime flying boat factory and its workers' huts which provided accommodation for the children and Windermere's connection with the development of seaplanes.

The money will go towards research this summer into creating archives and other educational resources covering what he calls "over one hundred years of fascinating Lake District history that is of international significance."

A Cumbrian wheelchair basketball player says he's thrilled to be representing the UK on the international stage.

Nathaniel Pattinson, 21, usually plays for the Cumbria Wheelchair Basketball Club Panthers. He's now been chosen to compete in the Under 23 World Championships this summer in Toronto.

The family of a Carlisle boy who died of liver cancer just before his second birthday is setting up a charity in his name. 

Fletcher's Fund will provide grants to families with severely ill children to spend on play equipment or family holidays.

Fletcher Fisher's mother Lianne told BBC Radio Cumbria this morning that people with a seriously-ill child often had to give up work which meant they couldn't afford to create special memories.
