Boys don't like reading books with girls as the main characters - and that "makes it harder for girls to be equal", says Lauren Child, named in Hull today as the new Children's Laureate.

Child, who wrote the Charlie and Lola and Clarice Bean series, was speaking after her appointment at a special ceremony in Hull City Hall.

She is the tenth person to be the official champion of children's books and takes over from Chris Riddell.

While girls are happier to read about boys, she is worried about why most boys are more reluctant to read books or watch films about girls.

"I don't know if it's just in our culture, or whether it's a boy thing, that they find it very hard to pick up a book or go to a film if a girl is the central character," she told BBC News.

This is the moment a car hit a man on a petrol station forecourt in Hull.

Jamie Topliss- Yates was walking across the forecourt of the garage when he was hit by a car driven at speed by 21-year-old Zaid Bhamji.

Bhamji received a six-month suspended prison sentence after admitting dangerous driving.

Mr Topliss-Yates received a broken pelvis in the incident and is awaiting a brain scan to see if there is any long-term neurological damage.

He says he wants the footage to be shown to make people think about their driving.

He's a soldier from Yorkshire was shot in the head and lost his sight in 2006 during a rescue mission in Basra.

A housing charity in North East Lincolnshire says it's going to invest £6m a year into improving its properties over the next 10 years.

Shoreline Housing Partnership has pledged to install new kitchens, bathrooms, roofs, windows and doors as well as heating and electrical systems.

More than 2,700 homes will be improved, the charity says.

Last week,it announced it was shutting three sheltered accomodation sites for elderly and disabled people.

Undercover police officers have been targeting hotels in the Yorkshire and Humber region as part of a crackdown on child sexual exploitation.

Officers in plain clothing accompanied by a child visited a number of hotels across the region, including in Hull and Scunthorpe, to see if staff would ask for identification when they tried to book a double room.

Staff at hotels and other licensed premises have been offered training in how to recognise signs of abuse.

The police say there were 63 cases where children were sexually abused in hotels or bed and breakfasts in the Yorkshire and Humber region in 2015 and 2016.

Det Supt Simon Beldon says: "I am pleased that the vast majority of establishments passed the test, although slightly disappointed that most only turned the officer and child away rather than actually report them to us. Only three establishments - including one in Scunthorpe - did do that."

A woman and two children have been injured, one seriously, in a crash involving a car and a lorry in Grimsby.

It happened on King Edward Street at about 15:45 on Tuesday and involved a white Volvo lorry and a black Renault Clio.

One of the children was taken to Sheffield Children's Hospital with what police are describing as "potentially life-threatening" head injuries.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is being asked to contact police.

Hull FC fans have been responding to the news that club legend Arthur Bunting has died at the age of 80:

A former sand and gravel quarry close to the village of North Cave has become an important sanctuary for one of Yorkshire's largest inland colonies of avocets.

Plans to upgrade Hull's traffic light system to a more modern version are to be discussed by the city council later this month.

If given the go-ahead, new digital lights will be installed which would be able to manage traffic flow and adjust the signals according to current traffic conditions in a bid to reduce congestion, unlike the analogue lights currently in place.

Hull City Council will need to install new lights over the next two years because the old analogue technology is being phased out nationally and will no longer be available after December 2018.

A report about the lights will be discussed at a council meeting on Wednesday 14 June.

Hull's tips will be shut every Wednesday and Thursday from today, amid concerns from some local residents it could lead to more fly-tipping in the city.

The city council says closing the household recycling sites at Sutton Fields, Burma Drive and Wiltshire Road will save £100,000 a year.
