Helen Bamber Foundation

The Helen Bamber Foundation works with refugees and asylum seekers who have suffered extreme human cruelty, including torture and human trafficking. The charity delivers specialist trauma-focused psychological therapy alongside expert support to access healthcare, housing and legal protection, and family support to help survivors rebuild their lives.

Amongst this vulnerable group are new or expectant mothers. These women, in addition to the incredibly difficult work of overcoming the trauma of their past, are also struggling to care, provide and build a better future for their children. Many of these mothers are completely alone in the UK, without the emotional and practical support of friends and family.

In the Helen Bamber Foundation’s Mother and Baby Group, mothers access specialist therapy, ante-natal and post-natal support, yoga, English classes, and welfare support. The group is a safe and welcoming community built on understanding and compassion where mothers and children benefit from the friendship and the support of other refugee families.

Through the transformative work of the Helen Bamber Foundation and the Mother and Baby Group, refugee mothers can overcome the trauma of the past, while becoming confident parents who are able to provide a healthy future for their children.
