Leicester City have signed Hull City defender Harry Maguire in a £17m deal.

The 24-year-old has agreed a five-year deal and will link up with his new team-mates in early July before their pre-season training camp in Austria.

Maguire told the Foxes' website:external-link "There were a number of clubs interested, but when I met the manager here, he pretty much swayed it into the direction of this club.

"Leicester are on the up and it looks very promising for the future."

BBC Radio Humberside understands the deal comprises an initial £12m fee with add-ons.

Maguire's former club Sheffield United will also profit as they agreed a sell-on clause with Hull in 2014 - thought to be 10% of any fee over the £3m they received for the defender from the Tigers.

Analysis

BBC Radio Leicester's Ian Stringer:

The Foxes are in urgent need of reinforcements in the heart of their defence. Captain Wes Morgan and Robert Huth have been brilliant, clearly playing through pain at times, but they need support.

Maguire ticks plenty of boxes. He has Premier League experience, plays plenty of games and does not seem to suffer injury too regularly.

It's a big summer for new boss Craig Shakespeare and this seems a very sensible start.

    It is a shame our free market system mostly benefits the rich and powerful.

    Just like society, in football, the rich and powerful continue to grow and get richer, with multi million pound purchases for mediocre players whereas clubs just a couple of divisions down are forced to organise raffles and launch appeal to supporters for donations in order to keep afloat.

    £17m for a middle-of-the-road defender?! This insane BT and Sky TV deal has not improved the quality of the league one bit. Clubs are just paying (much) more for less to try and stay in the league. These sort of transfer fees are an absolute joke.

    Good young ish player in a position we need due to our aging defence. Great bit of business from the board at my club. Those that dont like the amount of money in football, stop following or commenting about it. Or please let me know someone better you think we could get for that price. Also the moaners say not enough English players in prem, please name a better English option Leicester can sign?

    I find it hard not to swear at the transfers going through already.
    This lad was relegated out of sight for a reason. Apparently Robertson the left back is superb too. So that's at least two of the Hull defence who were superb last season. how on earth did they go down shipping 80 goals with a team littered with £15m players!!!

    You people on here saying he is a donkey or rubbish, have you actually watched him play, or have you been playing to much fifa again, He actually improved his game last season, if we had another 10 players with his commitment we may have stayed up

    Idiotbox. Having seen Maguire play against Stoke, he was for me the player who stood head and shoulders above anybody else in the Hull team. I believe it is a fine buy by Leicester. Believe he will go far!

    Very underrated defender in Maguire, people think hes poor just because he plays for Hull and a team that got relegated. Not sure if hes quite worth £17m but certainly a top defender that can play at the top level.

    It's a good bit of business nice young centre back yeah he'll make mistakes but at least he'll be dedicated to our cause. Hopefully Musa and Slimani just needed to adapt to our game and they will be great next season.
