Chlorine levels 'nearly triple that of a swimming pool'
Alex Smith
BBC News Online
Earlier today we told you that Severn Trent Water had been cautioned by the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) after more than 3,500 properties in Derbyshire and Leicestershire were left without safe water for 26 hours last March due to high levels of chlorine.
The DWI has since clarified that typically, there is 0.5mg of chlorine per litre of drinking water.
The highest reading detected in the distribution system in this case was 8.8mg per litre - nearly triple the typical chlorine level of swimming pools, which usually have up to 3mg per litre.

The scare was caused by failures at the chlorine dosing unit at the Castle Donington service reservoir in Derbyshire.
The DWI's investigation found that in this "very unusual event", there were a "number of missed opportunities to identify and rectify the problem before the event".
Earlier today, Severn Trent accepted the DWI's decision and apologised to its customers for the inconvenience caused.

At the time, the company's website crashed due to the demand for information after a monitoring systems alarm alerted them to the problem.
Staff handed out water bottles at Sainsbury's in Swadlincote, Derbyshire, and Tesco in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire. Residents said Swadlincote was "solid with traffic and there was no water on the shelves".
Some of those affected had criticised the way the situation had been handled and said bottles should have been distributed at more places than just the two supermarkets.

Labour MEP hopes for a 'softer approach' to Brexit
Maryam Qaiser
BBC Local Live
It's a year to the day since the UK voted on whether or not to leave the European Union.
Prime Minister Theresa May will meet EU leaders in Brussels today to look at the rights of EU citizens in the UK and British nationals in Europe.
Leaders are hoping to come to an arrangement to secure the status of about 3.2 million EU nationals living in the UK, and 900,000 Britons overseas.

Glennis Wilmott, Labour MEP for the East Midlands, said: "Maybe this gives up hope for a better deal than we may have had before because many of us were worried that we were going hell for leather for this cliff edge, this hard Brexit and that is in nobody's interest.
"It would have affected our businesses and jobs in the UK, it is now hopeful we will take a more soft approach."
