All six of Nigeria’s wins at
the World Cup have come against European opposition, and they have kept a
clean sheet in five of those six victories.
-
This was Iceland’s first ever
defeat in a group stage match at a major international tournament (Euros
and World Cup), having previously drawn three and won one of four such
games.
-
Nigerian attacker Ahmed Musa is
now his country’s all-time top scorer in World Cup games with four goals.
Only Asamoah Gyan (6 goals for Ghana) and Roger Milla (5 for Cameroon)
have scored more for an African nation.
-
Nigeria’s Francis Uzoho is the
second youngest goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet in a World Cup match (19
years, 237 days), behind only Li Chan-Myong in North Korea’s 1-0 win over
Italy in July 1966 (19 years, 198 days).

Pace is so difficult to defend against and Ahmed Musa just thrived in the extra space left by Iceland in that second half.

The Super Eagles finally landed.
Iceland played well in the first half but weren't able to match Nigeria's speed and intensity and they can't have too many complaints.

FT: Nigeria 2-0 Iceland
Iceland had a big chance to set up a frantic final 10 minutes.
Nigeria substitute Tyronne Ebuehi made a daft tackle on Alfred Finnbogason, tripping the Iceland striker as he went away from goal in the area.
The referee missed it at first as Iceland appealed before finally sending it to VAR, watching it on the monitor at the side of the pitch and duly awarding a penalty.
Gylfi Sigurdsson stepped up...and sent it over the bar...

Paul: I still somehow see Argentina scraping through. All it takes is to beat Nigeria and Iceland draw or lose to Croatia. Neither of these two are in the class of Croatia so Argentina could do it.

Danny Murphy
Former England midfielder on BBC One
Nigeria's first goal meant Iceland had to leave some spaces which helped Nigeria - the game became much more open then and Nigeria exploited it.
Victor Moses was great in that second half - he deserves credit. But it's a thoroughly deserved win.

So that result is good for Argentina on paper at least.
They now need to beat Nigeria in their final game and hope Iceland fail to beat Croatia.
Lionel Messi's men can still advance with an Iceland victory, as long as they finish with a higher goal difference (they are currently on -3, with Iceland on -2).
But that if they beat Nigeria is a big if after that performance. I doubt Argentina's haphazard defence will relish facing the pace of Ahmed Musa and Kelechi Iheanacho.
'Anything can happen in Group D'

Efan Ekoku
Former Bournemouth and Nigeria striker on BBC Radio 5 live
With this putting them in a more advantageous position than Argentina, Nigeria will have the opportunity to play counter attacking football against them and a real occasion awaits the Super Eagles.
This was always a group, once I saw the draw, that I thought anything could happen. No doubt there will be one or two final twists in the final games. Nothing would surprise me in terms of the outcome of those matches.

Jonny: This is fantastic news for Lionel Messi and Argentina. Now their World Cup is back in their hands when they play Nigeria.

But there's no need to take the throw as referee Matthew Conger blows for full-time.
What a fantastic second-half showing by Nigeria to blow Group D wide open.
And how about Ahmed Musa? Two absolutely belting goals.
