For England, it's Spain next, in Sunday's 19:45 BST kick-off, in Deventer.

Both of those sides have started their campaigns with losses tonight.

England face Spain - who beat Portugal 2-0 earlier today - in their next game on Sunday.

Looking ahead to that game, Lionesses boss Mark Sampson told Channel 4: "Spain will be a different challenge to Scotland.

"Overall, tonight, I don't think anyone was below a seven out of 10 for us."

Scotland goalkeeper Gemma Fay: "Some of the goals were very scrappy and some from our own errors. The scoreline would have been more flattering if we cut that out.

"This is a tight knit squad, we have had our ups and downs in preparations for this tournament. We won't let the loss weigh us down and we are proud to wear the jersey."

England boss Mark Sampson tells Channel 4: "We're pleased. We wanted to get a clean sheet tonight. To stick six in the back of the net gives us confidence.

"To start with, Scotland made things tough for us. They just came up against a clinical side.

"In my mind Scotland can still qualify. We wish them all the best."

Be in no doubt, England looked sharper, stronger and physically fitter than their Scottish counterparts tonight.

That may well be down to their recently increased strength & conditioning regime.

A convincing win for England but a dominant, strong overall performance. They will be a force to be reckoned with. They would have expected it but doing it out there is a different thing. It will feel fabulous.

The girls have said how hard they have worked physically and we saw that. Boss Mark Sampson was clever with his substitutions and that breeds confidence. England looked on another level. They came out on to the pitch and knew they were going to win. They had visualised this moment, having worked so hard in the build-up.

Jodie Taylor is hungry for success in this wonderful set-up. She spent so long in exile under Hope Powell for whatever reasons, but it spurred her on. It has shaped her as a person.

Scotland played some wonderful, one-two touch football in the England half and opened them up at times. England manager Mark Samspon will be happy but there will be details he knows his team can improve, such as switching off by conceding yellow cards, those type of things he will want to work on.

By the way, that's England Women's largest ever margin of victory at a major tournament, eclipsing their 6-1 win over Argentina from the 2007 World Cup.

Jodie Taylor, scorer of England Women's first ever hat-trick at a major tournament, tells Channel 4: "It's quite special. I need to go and track down that ball and get it signed I think!

"We played pretty well. Our preparation was great. We're really together as a group."

On facing Sunday's opponents Spain, Taylor adds: "Spain have had a really good six months. They're coming in to the tournament guns blazing as well, so it should be a really good match-up."

England striker Ellen White tells Channel 4: "To get six goals and a clean sheet, we're delighted.

"I was delighted to get on the scoresheet and for the others to score too. It's a team performance."

England were the better side and they scored some quality goals. They have creativity, strength and power, miles ahead of Scotland. The Scots worked hard and probably did not deserve to lose 6-0. They have to get up again, fight and be brave. England can win this tournament.

There is no way any player in the tournament can stop England's Lucy Bronze, she was spectacular.

Scotland made chances, they should be proud of the effort they have put in and deserved a goal in the second half. Tonight though, they were too easily beaten in the middle of their defence. The downside is the goal difference. If it comes to the last game, that could count badly against them.

You need to have all your best players out on the park and Scotland cannot seem to cope when they have a couple of players out. I did not see any Scotland players who did not give it their all.

Failing a win or a draw, Scotland wanted to avoid a demoralising defeat but that's pretty much what they were on the end of against an England side who certainly look like they have more to give.

Anna Signeul will point to the absence of key players but tonight provided evidence of just how far Scotland still need to go before they have the fitness or technique to compete at the top. They must now lift themselves for Portugal on Sunday.

The Scotland players look absolutely devastated on the field, and exhausted too. They've been put through a shift tonight.

England are thrilled, and gather in the middle for one of the happier huddles in major tournament history for any English side.

It's all over. What a result for England.
