Manchester United's pre-season win over Manchester City in Houston was "a very good training session", says United manager Jose Mourinho.

Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford scored as 67,401 at NRG Stadium watched United win 2-0 in the first Manchester derby outside England.

New signing Lukaku beat City keeper Ederson Moraes to Paul Pogba's pass on 37 minutes. Then Rashford drove in Jesse Lingard's pass two minutes later.

"I'm really pleased," said Mourinho.

"I'm sure Pep [Guardiola] is the same. The most important thing was to give the players high quality training."

City came close to reducing the deficit when Fernandinho's long-range shot was tipped over by Sergio Romero. And City boss Guardiola was delighted with the performance of 17-year-old midfielder Phil Foden, who was making his first-team debut.

"I don't have words to describe what I saw," Guardiola said. "His performance was at another level. He loves the club. He is a City fan. He is a gift.

"Maybe this season he will stay with us because he is special. Creating chances, always in the best position."

It was the first derby since the bombing at Manchester Arena on 22 May and both teams wore shirts with the distinctive 'worker bee' logo, which will be auctioned off to raise money for the victims.

Analysis - who is Phil Foden?

The 'gift' Pep Guardiola spoke of after the game comes from the Manchester City-supporting heartland of Stockport.

Foden has been at the club in some capacity since he was six and scored in last season's FA Youth Cup final against Chelsea.

He also netted for England in their European Under-17 Championship final defeat by Spain in Croatia, where he started every game.

Foden is also a fine passer of the ball and has an uncanny ability to get past opponents.

He is probably too small to be considered for Premier League duty in his favoured central midfield role at present but it is easy, looking ahead, to see him having a similar kind of impact at City as David Silva.

    So well done Phil Foden and Paddy Roberts. Looked excellent last night. Always good to see young British talent doing well.

    These pages are just a joke nowadays. Used to be able to have an intelligent, reasoned debate about football.

    I think people are being a bit too quick to pour scorn on the city goalkeeper (Ederson). He has only been there about 20 minutes .

    Cast your minds back to De Gea's shaky start at United, and look at him now .

    I'm a United supporter, but give the lad a break !

    Not surprising Man U won as they have already played a game whereas this was the first for City. City has to get new players to gel and United have to have a better season than last. United have to win more games and draw less and be less boring to watch than last season. City entertained but let in too many goals so need some decent defenders. Luk looks a good buy. Let the real battle commence.

    Actually this article is lacking in any detail at all. It could have been 4 or 5 for Utd with Lukaku hitting the post with a screamer and others going close. Some kids got hit outs in both sides. Walker had a good start but City need a left back.

    Had a day off today and happened to watch it live. You can't read too much into it but Utd look sharp.
    Those trying to downplay Lukaku already look a bit silly, it was a quality finish. They were in control. City showed it was their first hit out but that kid Foden looks fantastic.
    Is he English?

    Man Utd looking a lot sharper in pre-season than they did last summer, when they lost 1-4 to Borussia Dortmund.

    Mourinho is sorting the club out which is great to see. Rival fans were laughing at Van Gaal & at the end had sympathy for him. With Mourinho, the fear from rival fans is palpable. When you start becoming abusive again and pretending you're bored at Man Utd articles, it's a good sign.

    "He is probably too small to be considered for the premier league in central midfield" didn't know there were still people out there that said this stuff having watched Xavi, Iniesta, Scholes, Kante and the like playing in Central Midfield.There's an argument that the best central midfielders are the small ones

    When will you all realise that anything Man Utd do is big news. You can't blame the Beeb for writing about us. Everybody loves/loves to hate us.

    As an Everton supporter
    I think Manchester United will see an improvement in Lukaku as he plays with better players but the lad is a good finisher he is young and eager to learn
    He is a confidence player and when he scores a goal in a match he often scores two or three
