Man City 1-1 Everton - reaction as Sterling secures point in eventful game

It's part of football to try and influence the referee.

I have the same view here as Duncan Ferguson on the Everton bench and as soon as Kyle Walker went in I thought that was an elbow.

But probably it was a harsh yellow card.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, speaking to Sky Sports: "The second half we made a good performance, similar like last season when we played them here. We created the chances in the first half but we did not finish them. We have to try to create the chances.

"They made a good action. We have done everything, I don't know how many chances we created or how many they created.

"In the second half we made some tactical changes and created chances.

"I am pleased with all of them. We lost two points. We are here for the results, at the end we have to try to analyse the performance. Ten against 11, a Europa League team, we tried. We missed some chances at the end. Even though we scored we could not win."

Everton boss Ronald Koeman is asked on Sky Sports where he still wants to strengthen his team.

"A left footed central defender, back-up for Leighton Baines and also a striker.

"Even with the talent of Dominic Calvert-Lewin - if we want to make the next step we need a striker as well.

Everton boss Ronald Koeman tells BBC Sport: "They did not create a lot of open chances. They had the domination in the game and on the counter attack. We had some good opportunities.

"I am not surprised about Wayne Rooney. I know how eager he was to come back to Everton. We are really happy that he is back.

"Dominic Calvert-Lewin did well. He ran a lot and made it difficult for the Manchester City defenders. Then you can come out of your box and control.

"I think you can have your doubts about both red cards. Morgan Schneiderlin was more clear, he was playing the ball. I didn't see if Kyle Walker's was a second yellow.

"It is really difficult for referees. It is high intensity in the game. Of course after the sending off of Walker they tried to influence the referee."

Everton striker Wayne Rooney on 200th Premier League goal: "It was nice. To do it today in such an important game for us, with tough games coming up, it was a sweet moment and I am sure the red half of Manchester will have enjoyed it as well.

"We can certainly improve. It is early days obviously. We have made a lot of signings this summer. We are ambitious, we try to move forward. Time will tell, we aim to get better hopefully over the next year or two and hopefully that brings success.

"Everton have shown their ambition. We are trying to close that gap on the top teams.

"It is not bad for someone who is not fit anymore and can't get about the pitch! I have always put a shift in for the team and tonight is no different.

"I am focusing on Everton. I am sure I will speak to England manager Gareth Southgate over the next few days and we will see what happens."

Everton striker Wayne Rooney, speaking to Sky Sports: "Frustrating. We felt we could see the game out and maybe get another goal but you have to give City credit, they changed positions and made it difficult for us. I think before the game a point would have been good but at the moment a bit frustrated. When we look back in a week's time a point will be a good result for us.

"The manager has made it clear he wants to play me in the attacking positions. I have done that throughout my career and the thing for me is to play. I didn't play as much last year and if you don't play you don't get that match fitness."

Pep Guardiola went straight to Bobby Madley and almost sarcastically shook his hand. He obviously has a beef with the referees in England.

Man City earned the draw. They were fantastic in the last 25 minutes. Pep Guardiola was tactically fantastic - he'll be the happiest of the managers.

Ronald Koeman, if he's looking at progressing to the top four, will think they need to come to places like this and get the second goal.
