  1. Until next time...

    Djokovic

And so Novak Djokovic wins an eighth Australian Open title, a 17th Grand Slam and returns as the world's number one player.

    All in a fortnight's work...

Another man who's been putting in the graft at Melbourne Park is Jonathan Jurejko, and you can read his report from that marathon five-set final right here.

That's all from us, but don't panic - if you want some more tennis this week, we have the Fed Cup coming up on Friday and Saturday and we'll have live coverage across the BBC!

    Until then...

  2. Post update

    BBC Two

You can watch highlights of the final day's action at Melbourne Park on BBC Two at 13:30 GMT.

  3. 'We should stick together more than ever'

    Djokovic 6-4 4-6 2-6 6-3 6-4 Thiem

More from an emotional Novak Djokovic: "There were some devastating things that started 2020, bushfires here in Australia, conflicts in parts of the world, one person that I considered close in my life and was a mentor to me, Kobe Bryant, passed away.

"I would like to say that this is a reminder to all of us we should stick together more than ever, be with our families, stay close to the people that love you, that care about you, there are more important things in life and it is important to be conscious and humble about things happening around you.

"This tournament sets a high standard for all the others, definitely my favourite in the world, and I am blessed to hold this trophy once again."

  4. Post update

And here is the champion, Novak Djokovic: "I would like to start by saying congratulations to Dominic for an amazing tournament, it was a tough match but you were very close to winning it.

"You have a lot more time in your career and I am sure you will get Grand Slam trophies.

"I would like to thank my team, my family, my brother is here - thank you for coming all the way to Australia for some quality brother time and hopefully you enjoyed it."

  5. 'I hope I can get revenge soon'

Dominic Thiem: "I would like to start with a huge congrats to Novak. Amazing achievement and to all your team. Unreal what you have been doing all these years. I'm proud and happy I can compete in these times and period of tennis. I fell short but I hope I can get revenge soon.

"We also saw before and during the event there are more important things in life. We saw what this beautiful country had gone though. We saw all the people affected and the wildlife - we hope they can recover soon and a disaster like this never happens again.

"I experienced such a huge support during these two weeks. Thanks to those who come to the event."

    #bbctennis

Dylan Cleary: Dominic Thiem is a great tennis player but unfortunately he is 0-3 in slam finals now (admittedly against arguably the best ever on their favourite surfaces) but he's approaching Andy Murray type numbers now which is never great for the mental side of it

  8. Post update

    Djokovic 6-4 4-6 2-6 6-3 6-4 Thiem

Chair umpire Damien Dumusois - Novak Djokovic's best mate - gets his award.

  9. Can Djokovic become the greatest?

    Pat Cash

Former Wimbledon champion on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think Rafa Nadal is the obvious favourite for the French but it's narrowing because of Thiem. I think Federer has another Wimbledon in him, I really do.

There's still a lot more in this chase.

Djokovic has a better head-to-head record in this situation.

  10. The race is on...

  11. Post update

    Djokovic 6-4 4-6 2-6 6-3 6-4 Thiem

Former Australian Open champ Marat Safin is here to present the trophy.

After a bit of stakeholder chat, obviously...

  12. 'You felt in the fifth set Novak would win the match'

    Marion Bartoli

Former Wimbledon champion on BBC Radio 5 Live

You have to feel disappointed if you're Thiem. Djokovic could barely stand out there at the end of the third set. I felt Novak still had energy in his body. He was the best player on the court in the fifth set - the match was probably lost in the fourth set. When the fifth set started you felt Novak would win the match.

  13. 'Thiem's energy was lacking in the end'

    Pat Cash

Former Wimbledon champion on BBC Radio 5 Live

I don't know what to say. What a match of fluctuations. Let's give credit where credit's due. For Thiem to get as close... it's just at the end his energy was lacking a little bit.

Novak was patchy. Full credit. The last two sets he played a great tennis.

  14. Post update

    Djokovic 6-4 4-6 2-6 6-3 6-4 Thiem

    djokovic

Novak Djokovic raises his hand to the air, strides over to meet Dominic Thiem at the net and then bows down on the court in relief.

He really had to work for that, he looked down and out, what a final...

  15. Game, set and match - Djokovic wins Australian Open

    Djokovic 6-4 4-6 2-6 6-3 6-4 Thiem

Dominic Thiem sizes up a forehand but lashes it into the tramlines.

That's it. Novak Djokovic completes the turnaround, from 2-1 down he recovers to win an eighth Australian Open title and a 17th Grand Slam.

And just for good measure, he will return to the world number one spot.
