  1. Farewell

So that's where we leave you for today. There should be rather more in the sunshine department on Friday and play will hopefully commence on time at 11:00 BST.

We will be able to go on later into the evening to make up for lost time, so join us from 10:30 to see what transpires. Until then, enjoy yourselves. Cheerio now.

  2. Post update

South of the Thames at The Oval they are due to start a T20 between Surrey and Sussex at 18:30 BST and they are anticipating a brighter forecast weatherwise. You will be able to follow that match - weather permitting - on BBC Radio London.

  3. Post update

    Alison Mitchell

    BBC Test Match Special

Well done to the hardy spectators who stuck around for the day.

  4. Post update

The last time we had a complete washout in a Test at Lord's was in May 2001. England won by an innings against Pakistan in that game, incidentally. Darren Gough took eight wickets in the match.

  5. Post update

A little booing as the announcement of the abandonment for the day rings out around the ground across the PA system.

  6. Post update

    Phil Tufnell

Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

Win the toss and have a bowl tomorrow that's for sure.

  7. Play abandoned for the day

Play has been abandoned for the day we are told.

Martin Whiteley: The upside of today is that we might at least have some Test cricket to watch this weekend.

  9. Pitch inspection at 16:50

    Alison Mitchell

    BBC Test Match Special

We have word from the umpires. There is going to be a further inspection at 16:50 BST.

SMS Message: Finish at 19:00 and no doubt not start till 11.00. Utterly ludicrous and indefensible. T20 plays late and so what if a few blazers have to pack their hampers early? Out of touch and punters out of pocket. from Short-changed from Wimbledon

    BBC Sport at Lord's

Pitch invaders at Lord's! Two gentleman have just run on to the field and tried to slide across the covers. They managed to do a couple of belly flops before the security guards caught up with them. Not the most dignified thing I've seen today.

  12. Post update

Umpires Aleem Dar and Marais Erasmus are talking to England coach Trevor Bayliss and spinner Adil Rashid. Word is there will be a further inspection in 15 minutes.

  13. Post update

17:59 is the time they have to be on by apparently, not 18:00. Now is that both umpires, both batsmen and all 11 from the fielding side? What if someone is a bit slow making it through the Long Room and the clock ticks to 18:00? These quirky laws are of little comfort to those who have forked out a hefty sum.

How much for a pint Freddie? I ordered a pint of lager and an apple juice in a hostelry around Victoria the other week and it came to £9.20. They didn't charge for the smelling salts required to bring me round after fainting though.

    Amy Lofthouse

    BBC Sport at Lord's

It's, er, raining again. And it's got a bit darker.

  16. 'The groundstaff are being serenaded'

    Amy Lofthouse

    BBC Sport at Lord's

Will they or won’t they get on? It’s stopped raining and the groundstaff are currently being serenaded by some of the crowd.

SMS Message: Got to Lord's early for a lovely breakfast. The pub we are in has run out of beer and now we've progressed G&Ts. If play starts there's gonna be some atmosphere! from Si, London

  18. Post update

Now it's a little brighter beyond the legendary old pavilion, but it looks a bit like a sunset back there and, besides, the rain is still falling so the clear-up operation cannot begin yet.

A reminder that we have yet to see a ball bowled so far today and we have to start by 18:00 BST at the latest in order to see any action. Once we do get under way we can go on until 19:00.

Blaise Gonsalves: Should have played the match at Headingley! overcast with wonderful conditions for swing bowling! and no rain forecast for next 4 days!

  20. Post update

Surely they have played "Here Comes the Rain Again?" You'd think there would be more sponsorship on the covers wouldn't you? I remember the very much missed Ms Annie Briggs, erstwhile sports editor at Ceefax, saying 'why don't they advertise on covers?' Always ahead of her time.
