Relive how 14 wickets fell on first day at Lord's

England's top order problems remain as the hosts struggled in reply after a fine bowling performance restricted West Indies to just 123.

It's set up nicely for another cracking match in this third and deciding Test at Lord's.

For England to go to Australia and win, Stokes will have to have a special series. Not only is he important with bat and ball, but also his body language. He's a real team player, a Jack the lad, a character. But, when he's training, he hits more balls than anyone else. Some will say he's a natural, but he spends so many hours in training. It's the hard work that allows him to produce these performances.

Ben Stokes, who took career-best figures of 6-22, on TMS: "Bowling in the warm-up this morning, the ball was swinging, so it wasn't surprising when we saw how much the ball was doing.

"Rooty kept asking me how I was feeling. Sometimes the more I bowl the less tired I feel. I felt in really good rhythm. Knowing the ball would swing helped that.

"I wanted to say thanks to Ottis Gibson. It's been a hard six or seen weeks with the bowling, I haven't felt I've done the team justice. He's put in hours and hours with me.

"It's a special feeling to be on the honours' board. No one can ever take that away from you."

England all-rounder Ben Stokes, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was a difficult pitch to bat on, we would have liked to have had one or two wickets down but overall we are happy.

[On leaving James Anderson on 499 Test wickets] "He's got another innings to get it and what a place to do it."

Stokes is a freak. He can produce magic like that. Even when he batted he looked better than any of the rest of the top six. They are very fortunate to have him, because he will win games of cricket in every format for years to come. He might even win this match.

But Dawid Malan and that man again Ben Stokes led a slight recovery to leave this deciding Test in the balance at the end of day one...

But England were also to lose their mainstays Alastair Cook and Joe Root early on...

England have given players a run of games in the side. If Westley doesn't get runs in this game he can say that he has had a chance. Jennings and Hameed are two players that England will be hoping gets runs between now and the end of the season. If they both do, both will be on the plane and two of Hameed, Jennings and Stoneman will bat at two and three in Australia.

Stoneman's dismissal was soft and, when you see that, you instantly think of Brisbane. Extra bounce against the likes of Starc, Cummins and Pattinson. I think he will go to Australia because it is too late to bring another opener in. Root is another who will have to be careful of the extra bounce, he played a poor stroke.

England on top at the change but they too would discover batting was brutally hard out there...

So Stokes had three wickets at tea as West Indies limped to 119-7.

They would add just four more runs, with Stokes also taking the final three wickets, denying Anderson 500 on the day but putting England firmly on top at the end of the first innings.

It's in the balance. As an ex-batsman, I've thought it was tough. At times, techniques have been debatable, but we've seen some wonderful bowling. The Stokes spell was right out of the top drawer. He swung it late and at pace. West Indies, at times, looked they might get a score, then Stokes came in to it.

And at point, it seemed like a formality for Anderson to reach 500 Test wickets on day one.

Ben Stokes had other ideas...

Let's have a look back at the morning session. It was a bit of a ropey start for England as Alastair Cook dropped Kraigg Brathwaite on just three.

The Windies opener made 91 more runs in victory at Headingley after Cook shelled him on four.

But James Anderson kept finding plenty of movement and, soon enough, moved to 498 and then 499 Test wickets as he removed Brathwaite and Kyle Hope.

It's been a beautiful day to bowl. It's swung and zipped off the pitch. If the sun comes out on Saturday, you would expect a few runs to be scored. If it stays like this, we won't be here come Monday.

And that is indeed your lot.

England reach stumps on day one at Lord's teetering on 46-4, but also trailing West Indies by 77.

A day for the bowlers - James Anderson and Kemar Roach both bowling beautifully but Ben Stokes taking the headlines with a majestic spell.

The Durham all-rounder remains at the crease and will be key to England's chances of building a first-innings lead tomorrow.

It's been one of those days for the bowlers. Everything that has been nicked has gone to hand.

Umpires Chris Gaffaney and Marais Erasmus are the last to wander off the field.

Most spectators are heading for the exits as the covers come on, the groundstaff clearly confident that'll be it for the day.
