Free safety checks on electric blankets

Autumn is drawing ever closer and Cornwall Council is offering to carry out free safety checks on electric blankets, in a bid to reduce the number of house fires this winter.
Faulty electric blankets are said to be the cause of about a thousand house fires a year in the UK.
Police are appealing for witnesses after an attempted robbery in Plymstock, Devon.
The victim, a man in his 30s, was sitting on a park bench eating when he was approached by a man thought to be 19 or 20 years old.
The man tried to snatch the victim’s mobile phone from behind him, police said. After a brief struggle, the man ran off across the park towards Pomphlett empty-handed, officers added. It happened in the Dean Cross Road area on 18 September between 23:15 and 23:25 BST.
The suspect is described as white and wearing a white hoody and dark jeans.

Members of the planning committee at Cornwall Council voted to defer the plans this morning.
Porthleven councillor Andrew Wallis had urged the committee to refuse the plans, but councillors said they wanted to hear more from the applicant about the new building's impact on the harbour and listed buildings in the area and would visit the site themselves.
A new £2m revamp of Newton Abbot has been given the go-ahead.
This afternoon Teignbridge councillors unanimously voted in favour of spending the cash on re-cladding the shop fronts and replacing canopies with a larger glazed cover.
Rescuers have revealed the man who fell into a mine shaft near St Just has life threatening injuries after his 50ft (15m) plunge.
Andrew Williams, an experienced 51 year old walker from South Wales, has pelvic and leg injuries after he fell through a wooden cover over the mine in the Cot Valley.
Police said wood across an adit - that's a mine entrance - had given way yesterday, allowing Mr Williams to fall through.
He was only saved because he landed on a ledge - but it took a six hour rescue operation to get him to the surface.
He's being treated at Derriford Hospital where his condition has this afternoon been described as comfortable.

The National Trust, which owns the land, warned the Cornish landscape ''is full of reminders of the past, including old mine shafts'' and said people walking in the area should take extra care and stick to the paths.
Jailed stalker threatened victim after being jailed

A serial stalker sent his victim a threatening letter just hours after being jailed.
Mark O'Neill was made subject to a restraining order when he was jailed in September last year for bombarding the unnamed woman with unwanted calls and texts.
He got the letter past security checks by sending it in the name of another prisoner, but four more letters -written under his own name - were intercepted and stopped.
O'Neill, 43, is now being treated at the Langdon Hospital in Dawlish after being transferred from HMP Exeter because of his mental state.

Plymouth's dedicated hospital staff have been praised for coping "magnificently" following an extremely busy weekend - with extra staff being called in from home to treat patients injured in a horrific crash.
A 38-year-old man has been arrested following a suspected acid attack during a robbery to steal a mobile phone.
The, as yet, unidentified liquid was sprayed into the face of the victim who was walking by Tiverton bus station in the early hours of yesterday morning,
The victim, who is in his 30s and from the local area, was also punched.
Support ship RFA Tiderace sails into Falmouth

The Royal Fleet Auxiliary’s new support ship, RFA Tiderace, has arrived in Falmouth to begin a customisation programme.
The 39,000-tonne vessel can carry up to 19,000 cubic metres of fuel and 1,400 cubic metres of fresh water in support of Royal Navy operations around the world.
The four-month customisation work in Falmouth, installing armour, self-defence weaponry and communications systems, will help to support 300 local jobs.
Along with her sister ship RFA Tidespring, she has been designed to support the new Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers, the first of which, HMS Queen Elizabeth, arrived in Portsmouth last month.

Slade 'fighting for everything' - Hepher

Exeter Chiefs head coach Ali Hepher has hailed the form of centre Henry Slade as he prepares to join England's training camp in Oxford this weekend.
Slade, 24, has seven international caps and starred as Premiership champions Exeter beat Wasps on Sunday.
"He's coming strong," Hepher told BBC Radio Devon. "He's pushing hard, he's fighting for everything and he's highly motivated.
"His pace onto the ball is good, his carrying's good and obviously he's got his touches to put people into space."

There were 15 tries scored at the Mennaye Field on Sunday as Pirates recorded a first victory of the season against the league's bottom side.
