West Ham 2-0 Huddersfield - Bilic's side pick up first points of season

On taking Javier Hernandez off: "You have to take a risk, Javier Hernandez was doing everything but we had good players on the bench. I noticed a little bit that Hernandez was getting a little tired with those longer runnings and it was the perfect time for Andre to come on. It was not because Javier did not have a good game it was a time to get fresh legs on the pitch."

On Andy Carroll returning: "Excellent. You know what he will bring on the pitch. He gives an intensity on the pitch. He is always an option and when you have players like Anotnio and Javier Hernandez who always run behind it is great to have him back.

"We get a little bit of stability now because the situation has been almost a year now, not just a couple of weeks. OK we had three defeats, nobody is happy with that but nobody should forget we had a few players injured and we played three games away from home."

West Ham boss Slaven Bilic, speaking to BBC Sport: "I am really pleased with how we acted in a difficult situation. After three defeats your confidence is a bit down but the lads did everything we asked from them. We had a gameplan and from the first moment we were on the front foot. We stopped them from creating anything. We got our reward, a little bit lucky for the first goal but overall we deserved it.

"I said even if we did not win the game I would have been pleased with the performance of the guys because we had done everything. The first goal was at a crucial time because we had lost the momentum a little bit and that brought us back into a good zone."

Huddersfield boss David Wagner on BBC Radio 5 live: "Unfortunately it was a deserved defeat. We were not good today especially with the ball.

"In the defence we worked and fought, even if the goal is unlucky we have to be honest that we were not good enough with the ball - not confident enough or brave enough.

"This is the Premier League and in the Premier League it so difficult to keep clean sheets. We had the chance to keep one today, the goals were unlucky, but our performance was not good enough.

"If everyone was on it like Christopher Schindler was today we would have had a better chance to get a result. We had seven or eight players not on it. We will learn from it."

More from West Ham boss Slaven Bilic, speaking to Sky Sports: "The stadium I said last year that our performances in the second half of the season, apart from a couple of games, we have improved our performances.

"We have played some really good games here. We are feeling now like this stadium is our proper home. It will never be Upton Park of course but it is becoming our home more and more.

West Ham boss Slaven Bilic, speaking Sky Sports: "I am happy. I am happy for the lads and for the club. We started with three away games and three defeats and this was a must win game.

"It was not a nice performance but it was a top performance in all other stuff like getting the ball, winning free-kicks and corners. We totally deserve it.

"I feel the pressure for a whole year now. It is maybe not logical for me to be under pressure after three games but it is modern football. We said to the guys we would go back to basics, we had to keep the clean sheet and stop them from having the ball in dangerous areas. We knew with three players up front they would always cause problems."

A first clean sheet for Joe Hart in 23 league games - the last one came in a 0-0 draw with Sassuolo in Serie A on 8 January.

Huddersfield boss David Wagner: "We deserved this result; we were second best in everywhere and weren't good enough with the ball.

"We have to be braver and more comfortable on the ball; we made too many unforced errors.

"It was an unlucky goal that we conceded but we have to be honest West Ham were stronger today."

West Ham striker Andy Carroll, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was very important. We have had a tough run, we needed the three points and a clean sheet and that is what we got. The fans were behind us all the way, we gave a good performance and got the win.

"The team is a great team. The gaffer has brought some great players in and when everyone is fit it is going to be a battle to get into the XI.

"It has been disappointing to read a few things on what's going on but all the lads are behind him [Slaven Bilic] and to get the win on his birthday is even better."

If you're a fan watching that from West Ham week in week out it would be worrying. But Bilic could say Lanzini isn't playing and other ball players - he would say he had one way to play. If this was how he was moving forward his job would still be at risk.

It was all about getting the job done for Slaven Bilic, his team and the fans. They have watched better performances. You could feel the tension on the pitch. It was a low risk strategy and eventually it worked for them. Fair play to West Ham because there was a lot of pressure on them today.

It feels like a young, naive side from Huddersfield tonight. There's a talented bunch there. They have a certain way of winning games and tonight wasn't it. I've been very disappointed with them. You can only let in so many crosses or shots without getting away with it.

Four minutes of time added on at the end of the 90 minutes. West Ham take the ball into the corner to eat up a few more seconds.

Tom Ince attempts to cut inside Aaron Cresswell but his shot hits the left back's trailing leg and the ball bobbles into Joe Hart's hands. Time running out for the visitors, West Ham well on the way to a much-needed win.

There's a lot more zip about Huddersfield, quick passes and a desire to get the ball forward but where was this earlier? A crucial lesson learnt for David Wagner here.
