Here's what Liverpool's hard-fought win means for the top of the table...

Huddersfield boss David Wagner says he doesn't know why his side weren't awarded a first-half penalty.

"This handball situation was a huge situation and I don't understand why it wasn't a penalty.

"I haven't spoken to the referee.

"It was a clear handball and the ball changed direction because of this handball and Laurent Depoitre couldn't receive the ball. It is handball. That could easily decide the direction of the match.

"But apart from this we limited them and they're a top class team. We were with them and we can take this forward with us."

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says Huddersfield could count themselves unlucky not to have got something out of the game.

The Terriers were denied a penalty when referee Michael Oliver deemed Liverpool midfielder James Milner did not deliberately handle inside the area, while skipper Jonathan Hogg also hit the spot.

"That's all true," he tells BBC Sport.

"David Wagner told me immediately after the game it was a clear penalty. I'll have to look back at it. It was a closer game than we wanted."

Huddersfield Town manager David Wagner speaking to BT Sport: "Apart from the first two [games of the season] we have performed very well and limited our opponents and we have played with passion and aggression.

"[We were] brave enough to play man against man and press even the big names higher and I think the players have done it well without the right result for a number of weeks

"But this is the challenge and this challenge is an exciting one and we need to make sure we turn the performances into results.

"I hope people are not bored by my post-match interviews as they are always the same

"If you perform consistently then the results will come."

On the vocal home support despite the wait for a goal at the Kirklees Stadium going on: "

"This is the best support in the Premier League and to support your team without seeing goals and wins is hard and this is what I love about the club as they can really see the performance.

"It’s a wonderful challenge we face and it’s exciting. I want to transform this individual feeling into a group one."

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, speaking to BT Sport: "It was a good game from Huddersfield and not so good game from us. So we'll take it.

"I sometimes look frustrated on the touchline even if were winning. The performance wasn't 100% it looked like we could have scored in six or seven situations but we needed one better pass.

"We did lots of good things and then the last pass wasn't good. How can I explain that? I need to look back at the game. The players weren't great with their last pass."

On Huddersfield's winless start: "I watch most of Huddersfield's game and they've played Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City, Tottenham, Leicester, Everton... that is the hardest fixture list I've heard about."

Liverpool forward Mo Salah speaking to BT Sport: “It was a tough game but in the end we got the three points the most important thing. In the end we had to fight but we knew that."

On scoring his 50th goal in English football: “It’s a good feeling, as I said, the most important thing is to help the team get the result and now we are on track. It doesn’t worry me [when I don’t score], the most important thing is the team, so as long as I help them get the result I’m not worried.

“We had four or five players starting in the team for first time. All of us are at the same level so we have to fight [for our places].”

Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana speaking to BT Sport after making his first Premier League start since New Year's Day: "I feel like I’ve done as much as possible to be ready to play and it was nice to contribute after not doing so for so long.

"It’s good to get the points and Huddersfield have got a good chance to stay in the league and do well, but it's huge three points for us.

"There have been constant setbacks and at times you doubt yourself and your ability.

"It’s a long season and only a few weeks ago I was thinking where my next game is going to come from and then unfortunately some lads came back from international duty injured and that’s when you need your squad."

Ed: Liverpool attacked a lot better last season but defended far worse. This season there is less gegenpress but a far better defence. Hence joint top.

Anthony: That’s the sign of a good side, Liverpool not at their best but winning, turned those draws from the last two seasons into wins this season.

Joe: Liverpool the likeliest challengers? On this evidence, Man City have little to worry about. That was awful.

Josh Earl: Absolute herculean effort from Huddersfield who are so unfortunate to not come away from this game with anything other than a lot of pride. Credit to Liverpool though, this is the type of game they'd have previously dropped points in. Very gritty performance.
