Universal credit is a new benefit which combines six existing means tested benefits. It includes support for the cost of housing, children and childcare, as well as financial support for disabled people, carers and people who are too ill to work.

The aim is to simplify the process of claiming benefit, cut administration and to help people find a job or increase the hours they work.
