  1. On that note of pessimism...

It's goodbye from all of us.

Thank you for reading and your contributions.

Our live text will restart at about 02:00 GMT.

The question on everybody's lips... how many wickets will England lose in the morning?

  2. Get Involved

Andrew Bedford: Still think we will be all out for sub 400. It's the hope that kills you.

  4. Our man in Perth on the first day

    Stephan Shemilt

    BBC Sport in Perth

    Dawid Malan

"Malan answered their call, firstly by counter-attacking after England lost three wickets for 42 runs.

"The 30-year-old needed some fortune - he could have been run out had a David Warner throw hit the stumps, and a hook off Starc was top-edged for six - but, as he grew into his innings, Malan showed exceptional judgement outside off stump as well as unfurling glorious cover drives and deft cuts."

Brian Egles: Moeen Ali with the bat could be crucial tomorrow. Whichever of Bairstow and Malan is still there could get another 50+ if he sticks around. Could be the difference between 350 all out and 500+

Agreed. Maybe with the going good Moeen will finally shine.

  6. Brilliant Bairstow

By the way, we haven't mentioned Jonny Bairstow.

It was an unbeaten 75 from the man who's been in the spotlight for not 'on-the-field' reasons this series.

He moved up the order for this match and has been more than brilliant support for Dawid Malan.

And he also had time to make this lovely pattern on the Waca pitch.

Dave Amitri: Can people stop calling for Cooks head? It's classic Cook bad run = big hundred. There must be stats to back it up. Anyway who would you bring in?

Is your brother Del? No doubt you've not heard that one before.

  8. MASSIVE!

Does KP mean "mental" in the 1990s slang terminology way?

  9. It's a thumbs up from him

  10. So that Stoneman decision...

    Mark Stoneman

'Stoney' was going along nicely. Made his 50 and looking good for 100. But then disaster struck...

A ball from Mitchell Starc appeared to flick off his right glove en route to the gloves of Tim Paine.

Not out after an appeal! But then the review.

It showed that there was a noise when the ball hit a glove - but which glove? The glove on the handle or the glove off it?

Third umpire Aleem Dar over-ruled Marais Erasmus because of what the 'snicko' said.

Root was angry in that dressing room.

Thoughts? Any forensic experts out there?

Adam: Can’t understand the calls for Cook to be dropped. He’s had a few lean tests, but to go dropping your all-time leading run scorer and proven performer mid-Ashes series, when you’ve been searching for a decent partner for him over the last 5 years borders on ludicrous.

    It's not that ludicrous, really.

  12. AC(e) Malan

    Dawid Malan

Here's more from England's unbeaten centurion:

"It's been nice to score runs. I was under a bit of pressure, so it was nice to score runs when the team needed it, to make sure that I cashed in when I did get a start.

"It was good fun. I really enjoyed the pace that these guys come with, the short ball. In county cricket you're more worried about 78mph dibbly dobblies. It challenges you technically and your heart. It's exciting to walk out there. It's not comfortable, you don't feel you're enjoying at the time, but it's great to get through those situations.

"Most innings on this trip I've been peppered by these guys. I don't know why they keep picking me for the short balls. They are all quality and bowl good pace. It was hostile, tough to work out a way to play.

"Tomorrow the first hour is crucial for us. If we can give them a sniff with the second new ball we give the momentum back. We have to be ruthless. Wicket is nice to bat when you get in. First 30 or 40 balls, especially the way the come at you."

  13. Third Test, day one recap

    .
    • Root wins toss, opts to bat first
    • Opener Alastair Cook goes for 7.
    • Mark Stoneman makes 56 but is then given out after a review shows Mitchell Starc's ball came off the glove attached to the bat - or did it????
    • England recover from 131-4 to 305-4 at the close of play thanks to Dawid Malan’s heroic 110* and Bairstow’s 75*.

Katya Witney: After switching off at 115-3, waking up to see the score at the close of play was fantastic. Well done @dmalan29 true class and I cannot think of a better time to have done it. Hopeful for tomorrow that we can post a big score! #Ashesfalse #305-4

    That's the spirit Katya.

  16. 'You lie in bed at night thinking about scoring a hundred'

    Dawid Malan

Here's some more from England's hero of the many hours Dawid Malan:

"I was so emotional [reaching 100]. I didn't really know what to do, I almost started crying when it happened. To do it in front of my parents, the sacrifices they made. It's nice to repay them.

"With anything you do, you need self-belief, to feel like you belong. When you get your first hundred, you have that belief to trust your game. I might never get a run again, but you still have the belief to perform at the highest level.

"I do like to be positive. I walked out and thought, 'I have nothing to lose, see the ball, hit the ball and do what comes naturally'.

"You lie in bed at night thinking about scoring a hundred, I didn't even know what to do. You always play it through your head about how you're going to score a hundred at some point.

"Nice to do it under pressure and when the team needs it."

Scott Mabbutt: Having been burnt by hope too often before I fully expect England to be all out for 340 by lunchtime tomorrow.

    That's the spirit Scott.

  18. 2, 7, 37, 16, 7

    Alastair Cook

No… not my National Lottery numbers, but Alastair Cook’s innings during this series so far.

He was out lbw for 7 today in his 150th Test appearance. It was plum from Mitchell Starc.

There’s chat that the ex-skipper might quit Test cricket after the series.

This week he said: "Naturally, there is discussion in any team, senior players talk about the next move.

"Ultimately, I don't know. I haven't made any decisions on anything."

This latest brief cameo at the crease would not have helped his thought process.

  19. Elsewhere in Australasia....

    Ben Stokes
Image caption: It's like he's playing baseball!

Do you remember Ben Stokes? Well, the Durham (and England) all-rounder made 93 off only 47 balls for Canterbury against Otago in the Super Smash in New Zealand.

Stokes was named in England's squad for the one-day series in Australia that follow the Ashes, although he is unlikely to play.

    More on that here.
