  1. Post update

Not a good night for English teams in Europe. The results may not have had an impact on either of Arsenal's or Everton's respective Europa League campaigns but the performances will have still been very disappointing.

Still, it's almost the weekend. Always look on the bright side and all that.

Time for me to wrap things up, see you later.

  2. 'You have to play with pride'

    Everton 1-5 Atalanta

Final few words from Everton caretaker boss David Unsworth, speaking to BT Sport: "We got ourselves back into the game at 2-1 and looked to make positive improvements, especially at home. It is the story of our season, you can't give away cheap goals. When you put on the shirt you have to play with pride and effort and they didn't do that. That is the big disappointment.

"It was a dead rubber but I spoke before the game and said our fans had paid good money to come and see this. They leave with a bad taste in their mouth and so do I.

"We made a lot of changes. It was an opportunity for the players tonight and they haven't taken it."

    Ashley Williams

Carlisle United fan with a soft spot for his Grandma's club: Ashley Williams is truly one of the worst defenders in a proud Everton history of quality no-nonsense defenders. He's embarrassing himself and the club every time he puts the shirt on.

Adam Shougee: Both Arsenal and Everton giving wins to teams that were winless or winless away, I guess something must counter the success of Premier League teams in the Champions League, at least Arsenal got through. Everton fans saying no to Allardyce and Pulis, you could do worse and it looks like you are.

  7. 'They've made it easy for me to leave them out'

    Everton 1-5 Atalanta

Everton caretaker boss David Unsworth has had the unfortunate task of picking apart that defeat to the media.

He said: "I asked the players to make it difficult for me to leave them out of the team on Sunday, but the majority have made it very easy."

Sam Johnson: Truly shocking, and simply unacceptable. If you’re going to concede 5 away goals, at least put in a shift, score 4, keep believing and stick together. Everton are doomed.

Martin Hatfield: I think Everton are going to be in big trouble in the league.

Everton currently sit three points and two places above the relegation zone.

Steve, Everton fan of 55 years: This has got to be the best result for Everton. Perhaps they will now wake up & get a new Manager in place.

Moz Chugsy: In 21 matches including the opening Premier league game of the season Everton have conceded 42 goals. Two per game. 5 twice, 4 once, 3 three times. Not good enough

  13. Rooney disappointed and upset

    Everton 1-5 Atalanta

    Everton

Everton captain Wayne Rooney speaking to BT Sport:

"There was nothing riding on the game, but it's our pride. It's not nice to lose games. It's very disappointing and upsetting.

"We all have to play a role, obviously there's been a change of manager. It's been a positive change in terms of performances, tonight aside. We have to keep trying to pick up points in the Premier League and move up the table.

"(On search for a manager) That's down to the board, it's their decision. Since David Unsworth has come in there's been a great atmosphere among the players and some positive results. The board have a decision to make and I'm sure they're working on it."

  14. Post update

    Everton 1-5 Atalanta

It's been a long time since an English side suffered such a heavy defeat at home in the Europa League/Uefa Cup, 21 years to be exact.

Nottingham Forest lost 5-1 to Bayern Munich in 1996. But that's Bayern Munich, not a side 12th in their domestic league and who had not won away all season.

Adam Oldroyd: This is probably a very craftily planned result for Everton. They can now fully concentrate on getting relegated

Tom: Can I be the first to say it? I find all of this very amusing. If ever a message could be sent out that you can't buy a new team in one transfer window, this is it. Everton are just shocking.

Dom, Everton fan: Please Wayne Rooney, if you care about Everton leave in January. Everything bad about the team stems from him.

  16. Post update

Andreas Cornelius didn't score a single goal during his spell at Cardiff in 2013-14. He won't score an easier brace than tonight's.

Ryan Richards: Lost for words. That is quite possibly one of the most horrific performances I’ve witnessed. Could so easily have been 7 or 8 at the end

NikNak: Be a long time before Everton are back in Europe I think. Long time.

Karwolo Kamei: Will Unsworth be the first caretaker boss to be fired?
