How Hamilton won in Bahrain after Grosjean fire

Williams driver George Russell: "If the halo had not been there it could have been a different outcome. The way he walked away was incredible. Safety has moved along so much, so we can only be grateful."

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel: "I haven't looked at the images a lot, mainly because I didn't want to, but a grand prix car and barrier are not supposed to fail like that. It shouldn't fail and the car shouldn't catch fire in that fashion, so I don't know what happened there."

AlphaTauri's Daniil Kvyat, whose car clipped Romain Grosjean's before the crash, said: "At first I was angry that he had turned across me in the way he did, but that changed as soon as I saw the flames and what happened in my mirrors. I was really worried. It was a scary moment. I was hoping he was OK. I'm glad he is OK. It just reminds you that what we do is dangerous."

F1 Managing Director Ross Brawn, speaking to Sky Sports: "The fire was worrying, the barrier coming apart was worrying, but we can be happy with safety of the car.

"We haven’t seen anything like that for a very long time, but the barrier splitting normally results in a fatality. The halo saved the day and it saved Romain.

"There was controversy in including it initially, but there can’t be any doubt now - hats off to those pushed for its introduction.

Pierre Gasly, speaking about Romain Grosjean's crash: "It was horrible, when I saw the images I was shocked. It was really scary but I had no idea a Formula 1 car could break that way. The halo really proved to be working. I have text him to wish him a good recovery. I think he is fine but a really scary thing."

A really nice note here. A French journalist has received a message from Jules Bianchi's mum. It says: "They introduced the halo after my son's accident and now the halo has saved Romain's life today. This is great. I'm glad that he is OK."

More from Lewis Hamilton after his 11th win of the season: "It was physically very demanding. With the break we had at the beginning - you get into a mindset of going out and getting a good start - but with that 45-minute wait we had, it is so easy to step out of the zone.

"They (the Red Bulls) had a lot of speed today so I was flat out all the way trying to keep them at bay.

"It's physical, this track has always been physical. We've got lots of high-speed corners so I was definitely feeling it.

"I managed to just about reply to him (Max Verstappen) when I needed to but I was sliding around a lot out there and I wasn't really quite sure how it would play out at the end.

"So I'm massively thankful to my team. They did a great job with the strategy and what a privilege it is to get another result like this."

Winner Lewis Hamilton on the Romain Grosjean crash: "It was such a shocking image to see. When I get in the car I know I am taking risks. I respect the dangers that are in this sport. I posted about it during the break because it is horrifying. The car, the cockpit. I don't know what Gs he pulled but I'm just so grateful the halo worked.

"It could have been so much worse but I think it is a reminder to us and hopefully to the people that are watching that this is a dangerous sport. We are out there pushing to the limit and playing with the limit but you always have to respect it.

"It shows what an amazing job Formula 1 has done, the FIA has done for him to be able to walk away from something like that.

"But it will be investigated and they will do an awful lot of work to make sure something like that does not happen again."

Max Verstappen, who finished second: "It was scary [the Grosjean crash].

"We saw a red flag, which doesn't mean it's immediately a bad thing. I saw a lot of fire and thought that is not a good thing. Luckily he is OK and hopefully he will recover."

On his race today: "I was lacking a bit. I tried to keep close but they were ahead and we didn't have an answer and we didn't really go aggressive enough with the strategy, we also had a slow pit stop. It is what it is. Second isn't too bad.

"Hopefully we can find a little bit more pace [next week] and we'll see again."

Third-placed Alexander Albon: "It was obviously a bit of luck with what happened to Sergio (Perez). He had a good race, but the guys did an amazing job to get the car ready.

"A double podium for us and I'm happy.

"I felt the last few races getting better and better and results not showing so this is a step forward for us. All good."
