12 suggestions for the 'Best new building' in the 2010 Sheffield Design Awards

What do you think of Sheffield's newest buildings?

There is an opportunity for you to vote for Sheffield's best new architecture in the Sheffield 2010 Design Awards. The awards which were created in 2008 are held every two years and are organised by the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Sheffield Civic Trust.

Among the categories, is one which is open to the public via their website to vote - 'Best new building in Sheffield'.

The winner of The Citizen's Award will be the building or scheme that receives the most votes from the general public and Sheffield Civic Trust members.

To be considered the building must have been built between 2005 and 2010. Below are the 12 suggestions for the Citizen's Award:

• Sheffield Hallam University, Furnival Building
• St. Paul's Place
• University of Sheffield, Jessops Building West
• Castle College
• Conran Tower
• Leopold Square
• Project Orange, Cemetery Road
• University of Sheffield Soundhouse
• University of Sheffield, Jessops Building
• The Workshop
• Velocity Tower
• Annes Grove School

But if the 12 suggestions don't take your fancy, you can nominate your own suggestion.

Last year's winner - The Cheese Grater, officially known as the Charles Street Car Park

In 2008 the Charles Street Car Park, dubbed 'The Cheese Grater' by locals, won the Citizen's Award. The controversial building, designed by architects Allies and Morrison, is both loved and loathed in the city's landscape.

Paul Bedwell, Chair of Sheffield Civic Trust, explains: "The idea is to celebrate buildings and spaces within our city and try to promote good design delivered in the past five years.

"We've deliberately left the Citizen's Award open to many different types of schemes and styles of architecture. We've also given people the scope to recognise buildings that are not included in the list… I'm sure there are a few buildings which will feature in the list that people won't be fans of."

The other categories in the Sheffield 2010 Design Awards include Best building, Public space, Conservation, Small project, Residential and The Community design award. They will be judged by a panel of leading designers, lay people and members of Sheffield's Civic Trust.

Voting is open via the website until the end of December 2010. The winners will be announced on 16 February 2011 at the Showroom Cinema in Sheffield.
