Researchers have found that transplanting light sensitive nerve cells from the eyes of healthy immature mice into mice with visual impairment can help restore their sight.

Professor Robin Ali, of the Institute of Ophthalmology at University College London, led the research and explained how they proved that the retina were making synaptic connections.

Most remarkably, he said, they found that they could restore night vision in blind mice.

"This is a proof of concept," he said, which demonstrates the feasibility to treat common causes of blindness in humans in the UK.
