During World War II, Guernsey schoolgirl Paulette Le Mescam was evacuated from the occupied island to a mansion in Cheshire.
As part of the Foster Parent Plan for War Children, Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of the US President, agreed to adopt Paulette for the remaining years of the War.
In a weekly correspondence that lasted five years, Paulette wrote about her life as an evacuee living at Moseley Hall near Knutsford.
Paulette also sent the First Lady pictures which she had drawn, including this one of Bo Peep.
Mrs Roosevelt replied with words of encouragement, as well as sending Paulette presents of clothes, chocolate and food parcels.
Eleanor Roosevelt's signature. Much of the correspondence was thought to have been lost but the BBC has rediscovered it in the Roosevelt Archive in America.
"I used to get lots of presents from Mrs Roosevelt and the President," Paulette remembers. "There was a lovely dress and things like Lux soap which had a beautiful smell."
Paulette today. You can watch her story on Inside Out North West and South West on Monday 6th December at 7.30pm on BBC One.
