Nuri Sahin joins Liverpool from Real Madrid on season-long loan

Liverpool have completed the signing of Real Madrid midfielder Nuri Sahin on a season-long loanexternal-link after Arsenal ended their interest.

The Reds offered to pay a larger proportion of the 23-year-old's £115,000 a week wages, swinging the deal in their favour.

Sahin, who has 31 caps for Turkey, has passed a medical ahead of Sunday's match against Manchester City.

"I hope it will be a nice year with trophies," said Sahin.

Sahin had been expected to join Arsenal, having privately expressed a preference for the north London club. But the deal stalled when Real and Arsenal could not agree a £14m option to buy the player at the end of the loan.

Liverpool and Real then agreed a deal, with Sahin's agent meeting Liverpool officials earlier in the week to agree terms.

"It makes me proud to have joined such a big club like Liverpool," added Sahin.

"After the first conversation we had, I was left impressed by [manager] Brendan Rodgers. He told me about how he wants to play football and what the goals are he wants to reach with Liverpool.

"I am looking forward to meeting the fans."

Real boss Jose Mourinho had given the go ahead for Sahin to move to the Premier League after the playmaker struggled to make an impression at the Bernabeu since a move from Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund last summer.

Sahin signed a six-year deal with the La Liga outfit but made just 11 appearances for them last season as they won the Spanish league title.

In an interview on Liverpool's website,external-link Sahin revealed he was at the Ataturk Stadium when Liverpool came from 3-0 behind to beat AC Milan on penalties and win the Champions League in 2005.

"That year, I won the European under-17 championship with Turkey, so we were invited by the Turkish Football Federation to watch the game," he said.

"We were sitting near to where the Liverpool fans were and it was just a crazy, crazy night. It was then I saw what football and Liverpool Football Club means to the people."

Rodgers said he was thrilled to have secured Sahin's signature for the season.

"We are delighted to welcome Nuri to Liverpool and also to say thank you to Real Madrid for loaning us such an exciting talent," said the Liverpool manager.

"Nuri Sahin is a player with great technique and motivation and someone who will fit in smoothly to our playing model."

    Living here in Germany & being a Dortmund fan I can only say that one of my most loved teams in England have undoubtedly made a very good signing.
    Nuri is an exceptionally talented player & I predict he will help Liverpool get back to success. You are lucky Liverpool as Dortmund would have loved to have kept him but the offer from Madrid was to good to refuse.

Through television, Liverpool are the 2nd most viewed football club globally and sell the 4th most replica shirts (hence Warrior pay us £25m per year - highest in EPL). We are renowned for having unique fans and have won more trophies than any other English team. Yeah, we're definitely a small club

    Yet again, a football thread descends into "my team is better than your team" or "your team isn't great anymore"

    Liverpool are still a massive club with a history that is the envy of many English and European clubs alike.

    Back on topic, Sahin is a wonderful signing and a player I'm really looking forward to seeing in the PL.

    Some daft & thick comments as usual. You worry about your own teams we'll worry about Liverpool ourselves. We won a trophy last year how many fans can say that in this thread! (Before you say anything there aren't that many trophies to win per year but we won one) Chelsea & City fans now shut it & do one.

    Sahin is an exciting prospect.

    No great expectations for this season but would like to see the team enjoying their football. FSG stated that Brendon is the man and so they need to support him. The club needs stability more than anything else.

    I hope Adam moves on, Carroll and Sterling get regular starts, and that some of the pressure is taken off of Gerrard.

    @42 where does that leave the likes of spurs and arsenal? Let's look at the last 7 years; gooners: 1 f.a. cup, spurs: 1 league cup, Liverpool: f.a. cup, league cup, charity shield, Euro supercup and champions league? I'm a villa fan, but it seems Liverpool bashing has become a sport when in reality Liverpool are one of the more successful clubs of recent years behind both mancs and chelski

    @funkymc1 'Liverpool's decline over the last two decades'!! Which liverpool have you watched over the last two decades? The only thing they haven't won is the Premier League. most other clubs would snap your hand off for what they have achieved over the last two decades.Champions League, FA Cups,Europa Cup,Cup winners Cup, Charity Shield etc etc sounds pretty good to me.p.s Sahin will be fantastic

    RE:Paul Charles: Though I respect your view on the recent game at Tynecastle its very unfair to make a poor comment on Hearts being 'average'. We performed extremely well against Liverpool and based on the fact that your 2nd string cost in the region of £90 mill to assemble and Hearts cost £80k. Desire and commitment to play football outweighs the prima donnas of the premier league

    @179 Shelvey is still only 20. Of course he's still a prospect. What a daft thing to say. He's comfortable on the ball, a good passer and has good vision. Plus he like to get forward which is more then can be said for most of our midfield. He's a bit cocky at times and rash in the tackle but he's got all the hallmarks of a very good midfielder.

    So much negativity here, it must be coming from Utd fans posing as Liverpool fans. Take Sam's comments for example on Sahin, calling all our fans stupid! So I take it this Sam guy is some kind of football agent with inside knowledge on the Sahin loan deal that none of us have access too.....because he's certainly talking himself up as if he knows it all.

    Good signing for Liverpool. A player of his technical ability never loses it as its a mental trait. Liverpool will always attract this level of player because of their history. Players will want to look back and say 'I played for 5 times European Champions Liverpool, that's how good I was'. Liverpool also have less debt than a lot of clubs and will be back on the up soon so it makes sense.

    Hope this signing is a positive one. Defo need to offload Adam and Spearing. Hopefully Suarez will feed off Sahin, Lucas and Gerrad as holding midfielders with Sahin and Allen attacking

    Once a Liverpool supporter, always a Liverpool supporter! These haters should never forget that. we'll never walk alone. Sam & co take note. Sahin will remain at Anfield after 2days welcome. Don't write us of after just one performance. Many before have done that to their peril.

    This signing is a step in the right direction and has to be better than Henderson,Downing,Adam,Carroll etc who are not fit to wear the red shirt and represent the reason we are where we are - mediocre transfer policy stretching back years.
    As far as quoting the cups we have won - all well and good - the only measure at LFC is league form - and for 22 years, largely inadequate.
