Nepal plane crash: UK dead remembered

A plane heading for the Everest region of Nepal has crashed on the outskirts of the capital Kathmandu, killing all 19 people on board. Seven Britons died, as did seven Nepali and five Chinese nationals. Explore the map below to find out what happened.

Seven Britons were among 19 people killed when a plane heading for the Everest region crashed in Nepal's capital.

1. 06:15 local time: Flight takes off
The twin-engine propeller plane, a domestic Sita Air flight carrying trekkers to Lukla, near Mount Everest, was one of the first to leave Kathmandu airport. Previous flights had reported no problems.

2. Pilot attempts to return to airport
Minutes after take-off, the pilot appeared to have been trying to turn back before attempting to land on open ground beside a river. Airport officials said the plane appeared to have hit a bird, possibly a vulture.

3. Plane bursts into flames and crashes
Footage taken by people at the scene on mobile phones shows the front section of the plane on fire before it hit the ground. The tail was the only part of the plane still recognisable at the crash site.
