At least 11 people were killed and more than 20 injured when a bus plunged off a highway in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh.

The bus, carrying 40 passengers, fell into a dry river in Kinnaur district late on Thursday, police said.

Remote Kinnaur borders Tibet and is known for its treacherous roads and steep mountains.

Road accidents are common in India, often due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles.

A local police official, Veena Bharti, said the bus was on its way from Rekong Peo to Luri when the incident happened near Sholtu.

She said 11 passengers died on the spot, and the injured have been taken to hospitals.
