An 18-year-old man has been arrested and charged over an alleged sex attack on a girl who jumped into the Union Canal to escape.

The 15-year-old victim was grabbed from behind after she got off a bus at the bridge over the canal at Ratho, west of Edinburgh, on Wednesday.

The girl managed to struggle free and jumped into the canal, remaining there until her attacker ran off.

She then climbed out of the water and contacted the police.

Police said that the girl had been badly shaken but was otherwise uninjured after her ordeal.

The arrested man is expected to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday.
