The BBC director general George Entwistle says he is "appalled" by the allegations of sex abuse made against Jimmy Savile, and that the corporation will help the police in any way it can.

Liz Kershaw, the BBC Radio 6 Music presenter arrived at Radio 1 just as Jimmy Savile was leaving, in the mid 1980s. She says that one Radio 1 presenter, who she did not name, "routinely groped" her during her time at the station.

And she added that, at the time, "round Radio 1 everybody joked about Jimmy Savile and young girls".

A BBC spokesperson said: "We are shocked by allegations that anything of this sort could have been carried out by anyone working for the BBC. They are allegations which the police have the proper powers to investigate. We would encourage anyone with information on such issues to also speak to the police."
