How does a novel become a classic?

Nick Hornby's novel Fever Pitch is being republished as a Penguin Classic.

Author Fay Weldon, describes a classic novel as a book which makes sense in any century you read it in but says it is often a novel "you ought to read" rather than "you want to read".

John Sutherland, professor of English Literature at UCL, says the classic novel is a "very loose category" but also an important one.

"People want a bit of guidance as to how they're going to invest their time," he told the Today programme.
